Casey is a beautiful 20 year old female cockatoo who was rescued March of 2025. She has previously a life of neglect with multiple previous owners, including one owner who kept her in the closet. Most cockatoos at Casey’s age can speak — She is just learning to say her first words as no one ever talked to Kasey. Cockatoos live 40-60 years and my mother wanted to try to save this beautiful bird.

Casey is a loving, sweet, and affectionate animal. Despite the neglectful abuse from her previous owners, she has no negative behaviors.

A month after rescuing Casey, my mom observed several breathing episodes. Her breathing would become short and strained and the bird would appear to be struggling to breathe. My mom brought Casey back to the vet; The bird needs CT scan. The scan revealed a granuloma tumor and an enlarged spleen. These indicate infection, so the vet had to determine the source infection by running diagnostic testing on Casey. The diagnostic testing alone cost $900. All tests returned negative.

Three weeks later, Casey’s abdomen became swollen. An X-Ray revealed that she is carrying an egg. Unfortunately, she cannot lay the egg and became egg bound. She is currently hospitalized for surgery. The doctor will also be inserting a hormonal implant in Casey to prevent the production of further eggs. The implant must be replaced every six months and costs $300 each time.

So far Casey’s medical expenses have totaled about $3000. My mother works as a teachers aide for elementary school at BOCES. My eighty-five year old grandmother still works as a bus monitor. These expenses have been exorbitant for my mom and grandma.

If you could help us in any way you are able, we would be eternally grateful. Any dollar you could spare would lighten the financial burden on my family and contribute to Casey’s continued medical needs.

Thank you so much for your time and generosity,

Kim (the mother), Megan (the daughter), and Casey (the bird)
