<div>Quizás conociste a Karla desde la barra de Café Comunión, dónde sirve bebidas con la facilidad que solo se obtiene con años de dedicación a su arte. O tal vez la recuerdes de sus días como maestra de historia en una escuela en Puerto Rico, o de algún taller en un país productor de café. Karla es magnética, siempre está compartiendo conocimientos, entregando su corazón, contagiando alegría con su humor e inspirando con su estilo impecable.

<div>Este Marzo, mientras recordaba a las mujeres a traves de sus redes sociales sobre la importancia de realizarse chequeos médicos, Karla fue a hacerse el suyo. Los doctores encontraron cuatro tumores y le diagnosticaron cáncer de mama en etapa 3. Le han recomendado un tratamiento agresivo: quimioterapia intensiva, una doble mastectomía y, eventualmente, cirugía reconstructiva.

<div>Para quienes no la conocen: Karla es la mamá de Marcel y esposa de Abner, su compañero desde hace más de 16 años. Es una líder nata, educadora de toda la vida y una defensora incansable de las personas que muchas veces son subestimadas. En la industria del café, Karla ha sido una voz constante para las mujeres y los latinos, siempre buscando darles un lugar y una voz para construir un futuro mejor. Además de ser portavoz de Puerto Rico, la isla que ama y que la vio crecer.

<div>Juntos, Karla y Abner construyeron Café Comunión—que más que su fuente de ingresos, es una carta de amor a su comunidad y un espacio en el que se reflejan sus sueños.

<div>Aunque Karla y Abner cuentan con el amor y apoyo de sus amigos y familiares, el camino por delante será largo y difícil. Karla comenzó la quimioterapia el 5 de mayo y tiene tratamientos programados hasta septiembre. Después de eso, se someterá a su primera cirugía.

<div>Habrá periodos extensos en los que Karla no podrá trabajar, Abner tendrá que ausentarse del café para cuidar de Karla y apoyar a Marcel, su hijo pequeño de 5 años. Su ausencia del café implicará la necesidad de contratar personal adicional, lo cual aumentará sus costos operativos. Además, de estar incurriendo en costos significativos que no son cubiertos por el seguro.

<div>We’re reaching out on behalf of our beloved friend, <strong>Karla Ly Quiñones. </strong>
</div>

<div>You might know Karla from behind the bar at Café Comunión where she serves drinks with the kind of ease that only comes from years of dedication to her craft. Or maybe from her days as a middle school history teacher in Puerto Rico, or from a workshop in a coffee-producing country. Karla is magnetic, always sharing knowledge, pouring out her heart, and zesting life into everyone around her with her contagious laugh and impeccable style.

<div>This spring, while encouraging women on social media to get their checkups, Karla went in for hers. Doctors found four tumors and diagnosed her with stage 3 breast cancer. They’ve recommended an aggressive treatment plan: intensive chemotherapy, a double mastectomy, and, eventually, reconstructive surgery.
</div>

</div>
<div>For those who don’t know her: Karla is a mother to Marcel and wife to Abner, her partner of over 16 years. She’s a natural leader, a lifelong educator, and a fierce advocate for those often overlooked. In the coffee industry, Karla has long championed the voices of women and Latinos, always working to give them a platform and a voice to build a better future. She’s also a proud voice for Puerto Rico, the island that raised her and that she loves.

<div>Together, Karla and Abner built Café Comunión—more than just their livelihood, it’s a love letter to their community and a space they’ve poured their dreams into.
</div>

<div>While Karla and Abner are fortunate to be surrounded by the love and support of their friends and family, the road ahead will be long and demanding. Karla began chemotherapy on May 5, with treatments scheduled through September. After that, she’ll undergo her first surgery. 
</div>

</div>
<div>There will be extended periods when Karla won’t be able to work. Abner will need to step away from the café, too, to care for Karla and support their 5-year-old son, Marcel. Their absence from the café will mean hiring people to cover for them, increasing their operating costs. They’re already facing significant out-of-pocket costs that are not covered by their insurance.
