<div>Juan Carlos is a 32-year-old nurse who has spent his life caring for others. He has been battling Type 1 diabetes since he was just 7 years old, which meant a childhood filled with frequent blood sugar checks, insulin injections, and a constant worry about his health. As an adult, the impact of the disease has been even more challenging. Unfortunately, his health has reached a critical point, and he is now undergoing dialysis to manage kidney failure. Juan's doctors have determined he urgently needs a kidney-pancreas transplant to survive and regain his quality of life.

<div>The journey to a transplant is both complex and costly. The financial burden is overwhelming, and it adds an additional layer of stress during an already challenging time. Insurance helps, but it doesn’t cover everything. We are starting this campaign to support Juan through this difficult process. Your generous donations will help cover:

<div>1. <strong>Pre-Transplant Testing and Medications</strong>: A transplant hospital must evaluate and accept Juan for a transplant before he can be considered a candidate. Completing the process requires around $15,000 per hospital. Registering with multiple hospitals will increase his chances of receiving an organ offer. Additionally, while Juan is waiting for a transplant he must take a number of essential medications. The cost of these medications is about $3,000 per month. All of these expenses are after insurance.

<div>2. <strong>Transplant Surgery and Medical Costs</strong>: The cost for kidney transplant is about $450,000 and Juan also needs a pancreas transplant. Although insurance will cover part of it, we anticipate having to pay around $100,000 just for the surgery itself. Additional expenses will include hospital stay, rehabilitation process, and all necessary medical care.

<div>3. <strong>Post-Operative Care and Medications</strong>: Immunosuppressant medications, which are critical for the success of the transplant and for Juan’s long-term health, cost between $2,000 and $5,000 per month. In addition, Juan will be needing regular follow-up visits, lab tests, and other related care.

<div>4. <strong>Living Expenses and Lost Income</strong>: Before his health took a turn for the worse, Juan was working as an overnight nurse in a Cardiac Progressive Unit. In addition to the physical toll his condition has taken on him, Juan is undergoing daily peritoneal dialysis at home. He had to incur in additional expenses to renovate his home to accommodate a room equipped for dialysis. He was forced to stop working because of his health issues, but financial obligations remain despite the lack of income.
