Joseph Taban Rufino survived the bloody 12-year civil war in Sudan by becoming one of the 'Lost Boys'; the name given to the thousands of boys who journeyed for five years across hundreds of miles before reaching a refugee camp in Kenya. The boys watched their parents killed in front of their eyes, and lost thousands of their friends along the way before arriving at the camp.
The American State department sent three thousand of the boys to live in the U.S. as part of the largest ever resettlement in American history. Joseph was sent to live in Kansas City, where he continues to dream of one day becoming a doctor. Life in Kansas City hasn't been easy for Joseph as he has faced layoffs, a car accident and a violent attack along the way.

Joseph believed his whole family had died during the violent attack on his village. Incredibly, he found out recently that his mother Perina had escaped and made her way to Uganda. Perina had no idea Joseph was alive and had long-ago held a funeral for her son. When Joseph and Perina finally saw each other on Skype for the first time this year, there were plenty of tears and one question from mother to son, "when will you come to see me?"
We were so moved by Joesph's story that we have reached out to him and offered to create this crowdfunding website. Joseph was thrilled and we look forward to giving him the good news: that he can finally go and visit his mother.
