Help Jose Johnny Corona, Jr.

From OC MUSIC NEWS: It’s not often we write a story like this, but every now and then circumstances call for such a story.

In every music community, there are people who work behind the scenes to help bands and event promoters make things happen. You may not know their names or faces, but they are part of bringing you live music and the events we can now enjoy in person. One of good Samaritans is Jose Johnny Corona, Jr.

What you call him can vary depending on who you are and how you know him. He goes by Jose, but others shorten his name to JC, and some call him Johnny. Jose makes his living off his photography work, and is known as kind, loyal, and above all else, a very hard worker. For many years, he has put in his own blood, sweat, and tears into his work in our music community by photographing bands like Danzig, Suicidal Tendencies, Lit, Bad Religion, War, The Offspring, Rancid, Rival Sons, and Manic Hispanic… and that is just the surface of his professional resume.

While you have no doubt seen his band photography, there is more about Jose that is not publicly captured. Despite his impressive resume, he has on many, many occasions helped bands, venues, and promoters with his services and he has not charged them one cent! He does this because – as he once told us – “everyone needs a hand once in a while and if I can help, why not!” That sums up Jose. Many who know him in the local music scene can attest.

What’s the core of this story, you must be asking by now? Well, recently Jose was at an event. It was a rather large one here in Orange County. An event that had just about every punk band you can think of playing. Sadly, while shooting one of the headliners, Jose put his photo equipment bag down in the photographer’s pit area for the three-song photo time at the beginning of the set. Everyone was having a great time and Jose was capturing that moment through his lens. The joy ended abruptly when he noticed his bag full of camera equipment was missing.

Jose being Jose really believed someone picked it up by mistake and would return in. He had been working hard all weekend shooting the festival and he considered what to do if he didn’t get his bag back right away. How would this impact his shoot coming into the next few days? He hoped for the best that it really was grabbed by accident; he would put the word out and eventually have it returned. As of yet, his equipment has not been returned. As many would guess, it is likely he has been the victim of theft. For Jose this reality has set in.

When we spoke with him a few days ago, the bag remained missing and he admitted this has put a chokehold on his livelihood. The sad truth is we all have experienced a situation where bad things happen to good people for no rhyme or reason. We are asking for your support to help Jose replace his gear so he can not only keep his source of income, but allow him to keep bringing us some of the most amazing music photography around.

If you have room in your heart and wallet this holiday, please help the hands that help the bands. Please check out the GoFundMe page for Jose Johnny Corona, Jr.
