<div>When we first met Jose, he was gravely ill, lying in a hospital bed. He had been admitted with a life-threatening condition. His death was certain if he left the hospital. Yet, despite how weak and sick he was, he insisted he wanted to be discharged so he could go work and provide for his family.

<div>Jose is 24 years old and was recently diagnosed with a rare form of cancer called NK/T cell lymphoma. This cancer attacks a specific type of blood cell in the body and can be fatal without appropriate treatment. He has two infant children who are under 2 years of age. He works in landscaping and is the sole financial provider for his family.

<div>Because of the nature of Jose's cancer, he has required multiple hospital admissions with life-threatening complications, including needing to stay in the intensive care unit. He has a caring oncology treatment team who is ensuring he has access to life-saving medications and gets the best chance to beat this cancer. Part of that treatment includes a bone marrow transplant, which involves replacing all cells in the bone marrow with healthy cells. This treatment depletes the immune system and renders patients susceptible to opportunistic infections that can be life-threatening. As a result, Jose will require hospitalization for at least a month for the bone marrow transplant and ongoing monitoring while his immune system recovers.

<div>Because ongoing work in landscaping will expose Jose to infections that can be life-threatening while he undergoes cancer treatment, the recommendation is for him to stay home while he recovers.

<div><strong>Jose already has access to the best cancer treatment he can receive, but without financial stability and assurance that his children can eat and have a roof over their heads, he will feel compelled to work and risk dying.</strong>
