Help Jomner Recover After Unjust Police Shooting

On December 11, 2020, 19-year-old Jomner Orozco was shot by an off-duty police officer for no reason. The shooting severely injured his right hand and has completely devastated his life. Jomner and his aunt are now struggling to pay rent, and make enough to cover their monthly necessary expenses. We need your support to help them through these difficult times.
Jomner and his aunt are each other’s only family in Chicago. Jomner’s mother passed away when he was young, and he later came to the United States to live with his aunt after he endured abuse, abandonment, and neglect by his father. Before Jomner was shot, he and his aunt enjoyed a tranquil life, supporting each other in every way, including in making ends meet. They earned a living selling tamales, working as a team throughout the labor-intensive process of making the tamales. Jomner would then deliver the tamales to their customers. Jomner and his aunt enjoy what they do to make a living. But for the time being, Jomner’s hand injury and the car damage that occurred in the shooting have halted their ability to continue making and delivering tamales.
Jomner's aunt cannot drive, and the COVID pandemic has made finding other ways to earn a living virtually impossible for this little family unit.
As a result of the tragic shooting and loss of their livelihood, Jomner and his aunt have been struggling to make ends meet month to month: they have struggled to pay the rent or buy enough food or other basic necessities. Even buying vitamins, which his aunt insists Jomner take regularly to regain strength, have become a luxury.
The shooting
The shooting occurred after Jomner, doing the responsible thing, had pulled off to the side of the road when he became lost on his way to see a friend. While Jomner was parked and consulting his GPS, Kevin Bunge, an off-duty police officer inexplicably shot at him, shattering the car’s window and severely injuring Jomner’s right hand.
Bunge – who teaches use of force classes to other police officers for the Chicago Police Department - now faces criminal charges .
Last month, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA), which has been investigating the incident released a report and videos that contradict Bunge’s story that he felt threatened at the time. Jomner and the friend who was with him that day have filed a federal lawsuit . In Jomner’s words, “I hope no one else ever has to experience what happened to us. The police department needs to control its officers. This should never have happened, and we will fight for justice.”
Jomner faces a long battle to regain the use of his right hand and to fight for justice in his case. In the meantime, we are asking that members of the community help carry Jomner and his aunt through this difficult time by making a monetary contribution to ease their financial burden.
