Help John Isaiah Pepion Recover from Amputation

Donation protected

On June 4th, renowned Blackfeet artist and educator John Isaiah Pepion was airlifted over 100 miles from the Blackfeet Indian Community to Kalispel Regional Medical Center. He had sepsis and gangrene in his foot - along with additional serious complications due to diabetes. Upon arrival, he was rushed into surgery. The doctors amputated a toe as the first step towards saving his foot – and his life. This nightmare was just the beginning of what will be a very long and difficult recovery process – with a catastrophic impact on his finances.

John spent the next 3 full weeks under constant care in the Surgical Floor before being transferred to a long-term care facility. He will remain there for the foreseeable future as he does not have a discharge date. If everything goes smoothly, he will keep his foot.

The timing of this nightmare couldn’t be worse, as it began just as John’s career seemed to be reaching a new level. He has had to cancel many speaking engagements, panel discussions, art shows and other activities through which he made his living. It’s impossible for him to physically ship anything purchased on his website. The earliest he could possibly get back to his day job as an arts educator is October – over 3 months from now.

Despite the uncertainty about his foot and looming bills, John’s focus remains positive. His blood sugar is stabilized. He passes the time by watching the NBA Finals, sketching and reading books about tipi technology and Blackfeet culture. On June 23rd, he posted

“I miss the sweat lodge, ceremonies, and especially berry soup. But my prayers remain strong.”

His positive attitude is especially impressive given that he had been trying to address this medical issue at the early stages for months before actually getting sick.

Our friend John would never make a monetary ask on his own, so we are pitching in to do it for him. Whether you’re a friend, fan or just learning about John’s work today, please consider donating to help him cover bills, replace lost wages, medical expenses and all the fallout from a surprise medical emergency like this one.

This campaign was organized the friends and colleagues of John at Eighth Generation. We extend our sincerest gratitude to folks who can donate - or even just spread the word about this effort to help John. Anything helps!
