Help Jocelyn pay for Ida relocation and pet death

Donation protected

Hi. I’m Karla. I'm a Chicana artist and language justice worker based in New Orleans. There’s no easy way to say this. Our family lost our home in Hurricane Ida. We've lived lived in Cut Off, LA since 2001. Cut Off is in Lafourche Parish, one of the bayou parishes devastated by the hurricane. My ma invested so much money, love, and labor into turning that space into our home — and just like that, it’s gone.

Though me, my mom, and my 3 siblings are physically safe, this tragedy has really impacted my younger sister Jocelyn who is disabled and lived with my mom in the house.

Already grieving the loss of our home, yesterday Jocy's beloved dog Darcy died in an accident.

Jocy is a rad human being; she’s outspoken about disability rights and justice, a social media content creator, and model. Jocy gives so much of herself to her work, her family, and community, and she is one of the most generous and loving humans you’ll ever meet. If you know Jocy, you know how much she loves our/her dog Darcy. We are absolutely devastated, grieving for our home and the sudden loss of our lil family member, and just trying to figure out what our next move is.

Right now my immediate priority is gathering funds to help my sister Jocelyn relocate, care for herself, and pay for Darcy's bills. She is staying with me for the time being, but she lost her computer (which she needs for work), and most of her belongings — including the wheelchair she needs to help her move around. Jocy asked that I create the fundraiser as she is still grieving and processing the last week. The funds gathered will be used for the following:

- laptop for work

- wheelchair repairs/replacement

- moving expenses

- Therapy/grief counseling

- personal care items

- funeral/burial costs for Darcy

- Other needs as they come up

I know our family will get through this but we need support from the community. So many similar stories and calls for support are going around but if you’ve ever worked with me, kicked it with me, or felt a connection to my art, I ask that you please share this with your networks and consider chipping in.

My sister Jocelyn is my best friend and right now I need y’all to help me support her through this heartbreak. We keep us safe. From the bottom of my heart, thank you.
