<div>Joaquin, our 6 month old baby, came to the world as a beautiful healthy boy in Guatemala. After first vaccination he started with a rash and became unwell losing weight and developed a skin abscess. With our best effort, we could not keep him healthy and made us worried that something bad was happening; after seeing several specialists in our country without a clear answer of what is going on, the Doctors were getting worried that this is a complex and possibly life threatening condition. By looking into his eyes with fear, we know that we had to go look for care outside of our country.

<div>We arrived as fast as we could at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital, the doctors immediately recognized the danger and rushed him to the intensive care unit. His high sodium level and severe malnutrition was making everyone frightened. We were surprised that after many weeks of medical exams and battling for his life numerous times, the doctors were finally able to determine Joaquin’s ultra rare condition known as Pediatric Congenital Athymia which can weaken his immune system and at the same time cause severe inflammation.

<div>Congenital Athymia means Joaquin was born without a Thymus, a vital gland essential for developing his immune system. Without T cells, his ability to defend against infections is nearly nonexistent, leading to a life expectancy of just 2 to 3 years without treatment.

<div>When we talked to doctors in London, UK and the US, we understood that he needs care not only to support his immune system but actually receive a school for the T cells, the Thymus.

<div>Now we embarked on a journey to keep him safe and secure a lifesaving treatment of Thymus Transplant which is not available in Central America. Against our best efforts and securing international insurance for our child, the expense of his treatment has been tremendous (&gt;$1 Million), which has reached it’s coverage limit.

<div>The cost of a Thymus transplant at Duke University Medical Center is estimated at $2.7 million, (just this place in all USA gives this treatment).Thymus transplant is so expensive, that we decided to start this fundraising journey. According to the Duke studies, immune reconstitution with Thymic transplantation takes between six months to a year and the survival rate of children treated is about 80 percent. We have high hopes to succeed and unite our family and keep our warrior Joaquin safe to be able to grow up with his loving sisters and extended family. We dream of a life where Joaquin can play freely with his sisters, go to school without fear, and experience the joys of childhood like every other child.

<div>Joaquín, nuestro bebé de 6 meses, vino al mundo como un hermoso niño sano en Guatemala. Después de su primera vacunación, comenzó con problemas en la piel,  lo que lo hacia sentir muy mal, se llego a desnutrir y desarrolló abscesos lo que causo infección en la sangre. A pesar de nuestros mejores esfuerzos, no pudimos mantenerlo saludable y nos preocupaba que algo grave estuviera ocurriendo. Tras consultar a varios especialistas en nuestro país sin obtener una respuesta clara sobre lo que sucedía, los médicos comenzaron a preocuparse de que se tratara de una condición compleja y posiblemente mortal. Al mirarlo a los ojos con temor, supimos que teníamos que buscar atención médica fuera de nuestro país.

<div>Llegamos tan rápido como pudimos al Hospital Johns Hopkins All Children’s, donde los médicos reconocieron de inmediato el peligro y lo llevarón de urgencia a la unidad de cuidados intensivos. Su nivel elevado de sodio y la desnutrición severa generaron un gran temor. Nos sorprendió que, después de varias semanas de exámenes médicos y múltiples batallas por su vida, los médicos finalmente pudieran determinar la ultra rara condición de Joaquín conocida como Atimia Congénita Pediátrica, la cual debilita su sistema inmunológico y al mismo tiempo causa una inflamación severa.

<div>La Atimia Congénita significa que Joaquín nació sin un Timo, una glándula vital para desarrollar su sistema inmunológico. Sin células T, su capacidad para defenderse de infecciones es casi inexistente, lo que lleva a una expectativa de vida de solo 2 a 3 años sin tratamiento. Cuando hablamos con médicos en Londres, Reino Unido, y en Estados Unidos, entendimos que necesita atención no solo para apoyar su sistema inmunológico, sino para recibir una escuela para las células T: el Timo.

<div>Ahora hemos emprendido un viaje para mantenerlo seguro y asegurar un tratamiento que salve su vida: un trasplante de Timo, el cual no está disponible en Centroamérica. A pesar de nuestros mejores esfuerzos y de haber asegurado un seguro internacional para nuestro hijo, el costo de su tratamiento ha sido enorme (&gt;$1 Millón), lo que ha alcanzado el límite de cobertura.

<div>El costo de un trasplante de Timo en el Centro Médico de la Universidad de Duke se estima en $2.7 millones (solo este centro en todo Estados Unidos ofrece este tratamiento). El trasplante de Timo es tan costoso que decidimos iniciar esta campaña de recaudación de fondos.
