Help Jim Furnish Medical Recovery

Donación protegida
Jim Furnish has been fighting cancers for the last decade, and has gone through surgeries and several bouts of chemotherapy and radiation, including one botched surgery that required a lengthy and painful recovery.

A year and a half ago, he was diagnosed as cancer-free and in good health.  He spent that time enjoying life in Gearhart Oregon, where he has lived for nearly his entire 70 years, and worked as a self-employed commercial fisherman, an able hand on fishing boats and a professional clam digger.  He was able to continue working to support himself and pay his medical debts until a few weeks ago, when symptoms returned.

After two weeks in a Portland hospital he was diagnosed with new metastatic cancers in his liver and pelvic bone. These will be treated as much as is possible with usual methods (surgery, chemo, radiation). Although the prognosis is not encouraging, there is room for hope and at present Jim is able to continue to enjoy his home in Gearhart and his family and many friends.

However, he and his doctors anticipate that he will be permanently unable to continue working to support himself during treatment and recovery, which might continue for the rest of his life.  At the moment he can still walk and drive, though with difficulty because of chronic pain and weakness.  He has a very small Social Security allowance, not enough to support himself, his savings have long been exhausted on previous treatments and recovery, and his family's ability to help is limited.

Jim is not the kind of person who feels comfortable asking for charity; he has always been independent, capable, and self-reliant. But now he has a legitimate and urgent need for help with his basic living and recovery expenses.

We are asking for a target amount of $20,000 which we believe will cover anticipated outstanding recovery expenses for at least roughly one year, including room and board, utilities, insurance, and payment for local caregivers.

Jim has many personal friends as well as those he knows online through his Facebook presence as founder of the group Million Friends of Gearhart, a group he founded to promote the basic values, traditions, history, and community of Gearhart. If you know Jim or are able to help, please feel free to donate whatever amount you can spare.

Jim's mailing address is PO Box 2013, Gearhart Oregon, 97138 if you want to contact him directly.
