Please help our brother Jim DeLuca while he will be recovering from back surgery.
The disc between his L4/L5 is extremely herniated which is causing nerve damage to his left lower back and left leg, Besides the excrutiating pain this is causing, he is losing strength in his left leg making it difficult to walk and making him susceptible to falls. The longer this goes on, the possibility of irreparable damage to the nerve exists.
He has consulted with 3 highly regarded experts and they all concur that surgery to correct this problem is necessary. The procedure to be performed will take 90 minutes, It consists of making a small incision in his left side, removing the damaged disc, inserting a spacer that will open up the area where the nerves travel through his spine and tile his spine inward to bring it back toward the natural curve that should be there.
Recovery time is 6 to 8 weeks with absolutely no work for at LEAST have that time. His progress will be evaluated every 2 weeks and a determination will be made as to when he can return to work full time without risk of damage to his back. He does not have ANY time off from work as he used it for recovery from a prior back procedure and medical and dental issues he has had this year.
He LOVES his job and is making every effort to accommodate his employers requirements and the people who he works for on the job every day. They have offered their support in unexpected and selfless ways which he is truly thankful to have.
Unfortunately, he does not have the ability to pay for his portion of the surgery, the required postoperative physical therapy or any other costs associated with recovery. He will not have money for rent or living expenses for the time he will be off of work. We are estimating that his medical bills will be somewhere are $5,000, 2 months rent and living expenses will be around another $5,000 (remember, he lives in downtown DC which is extremely expensive!)
We are hoping that friends and family will donate whatever they can to help Jim out as we as a family, are not able to cover these expenses for him.
