My name is Jillian, and I’m reaching out for help because my wheelchair broke last night. Without it, I’m unable to move around my apartment and have become almost completely bed bound. My wheelchair is four years old, and the wheels have been falling apart, making it unsafe and unusable. I was diagnosed with Ehlers Danlos Syndrome in 2021 and Ankylosing Spondylitis in 2024, which cause severe pain and instability in my lower back and hips. Because of these conditions, I need a manual wheelchair with specific measurements for safety and comfort.

I used to be more ambulatory and could get around, but in July, I became completely dependent on my wheelchair. I also had to quit the job I had just started because I saw a lot of accessibility flaws and improper practices for people with disabilities after becoming dependent on my chair.

Unfortunately, my insurance doesn’t consider a fitted wheelchair a necessity and has only offered me a basic manual transfer chair, which actually causes me more harm than good. This means I have to pay out of pocket for the chair I truly need. My husband works full time, so I’m home alone most days and don’t have family nearby to help. Not having a proper wheelchair has taken away my independence and made daily life extremely difficult.

I’m asking for support to help me get a safe, comfortable wheelchair that will restore my mobility and allow me to regain my independence. Any help would mean the world to me and make a real difference in my life.
