For the past several years, I have faced one challenge after another. I cared for my spouse of 43 years through multiple foot surgeries, and as her health declined, my debt grew. In January 2023, we learned she had stage IV cancer, and I became her full-time caregiver until she passed away in April. Texas law prevented me from collecting my spouse’s social security, adding to my financial strain. I have needed both hips replaced since 2014, but I put my own health aside to care for my spouse. Now, at 67, I am still working as a lab technician, enduring severe pain every day, and facing years more of work ahead.
