Help jij Nikki (23) haar leven terug te krijgen?

English version below

POTS (Posturaal Orthostatische Tachycardie Sydroom) & ME/CVS

AMN (Acute Maculaire Neuroretinopathie)

2021 - corona (juni)

2021 - vaccinatie tegen corona (december)

2022 - corona (februari)

2022 - griep (Influenza A) en Pericarditis (maart)

2022 - Post Viraal Syndroom, Dysautonomie en Post Pericarditis (mei)

2022 - Migraine (juni)

2023 - POTS en ME/CVS vastgesteld (mei)

2023 - AMN rechteroog vastgesteld (november)

Behandeling in Amerika

Waarom is hulp nodig?

English version (automated transation)

Will you help Nikki (23) get her life back?

Do you help Nikki live instead of surviving? It is hard to describe how my sister’s life has changed in a short time. Nikki has been ill for 2 years and has the diagnoses: Post viral syndrome, Post Pericarditis, POTS, ME/CFS and Lyme. Anyone who knows Nikki knows how lively, caring and enthusiastic she is. She was in full life, was always there for others, was busy with her thesis, did not want to miss any social contact, hockey, went to the gym, enjoyed traveling, parties and fun things to do. An ambitious busy bee. In short, Nikki was alive and well and in a split second her life changed completely on 3 March 2022 due to a flu virus and inflammation of her pericarditis (Pericarditis). What initially looked like just looks like just looks, soon revealed in a terrible reality. Nikki barely recovered and remained seriously ill. Now there is a promising treatment in America, which is not covered by health insurance.

Nikki’s story:

Nikki's life has been standing still for two years

March 3, 2022, the day my life changed completely. I woke up in the middle of the night with a heartbeat of 180, chest pain, fever and sank through my legs. I felt everything this wasn’t okay. Once at the First Heart Aid in the hospital it soon became clear that I had Pericarditis an inflammation of my pericarditis due to a flu virus (Influenza A). It would take me 6 weeks to recover. I was given physiotherapy after this, which was completely counter-expoiled. I just got sicker with all the effort and movement. The high heartbeats, fever and fatigue got worse. In June 2022, many ambulance rides, hospital visits and admissions, my cardiologist also diagnosed dysautonomy, Post Pericarditis and Post Viral Syndrome. I got more and more symptoms of migraines, blurry vision of my right eye, muscle pain in my entire body, extreme fatigue, palpitations, stings and I had trouble standing on my feet. In May 2023 a tilt table test was done and I also have POTS and ME/CFS. On the blood vessel ultrasound was clearly seen that when I am in standing position, my blood volume is much less. Rest and stay between my boundaries was the advice. If I go beyond my limits, this is super detrimental to my energy level and can continue to deteriorate. My life has been rotated 180 degrees in two years, in the beginning I made small steps forward, but since a few months this has stagnated and I stay at the same point. Unfortunately, there is no sudden recovery.

I also have Lyme disease. In 2017 I was stabbed in Spain by a tiger mosquito or tick. I had two even colored spots on my leg. Then we went to a doctor in Spain, who prescribed antibiotics to me. If the antibiotics didn't turn on after a few days, we had to come back. The doctor wanted blood tests on Lyme disease and my blood results were positive. The doctor would forward everything and advised to continue treatment in the Netherlands. Once back in the Netherlands they wanted to do a blood collection again and my blood rash was negative. Between 2017 and 2022 I did nothing more with that, but because I became ill in March 2022, this story revived. In June 2022 and June 2023 I was tested again for Lyme and the result was dubious, but they do not do anything with it. Then I started looking for a Lyme doctor in the Netherlands at my own expense and this doctor has done more extensive research and my blood results turned out to be positive for Lyme, but also for the co-infections of Lyme. Several infected white blood cells were found. This could be an indication of an acute, active infection, which is generally accompanied by symptoms. In addition, a number of infected white blood cells were found, the vitality of which was low to moderate. In general, the low activity is not an indication of an acute infection. This is a chronic illness that is in remission. It could also be a resurgence of a remission. There are often symptoms. Both vaccination and (flu) viruses can cause the underlying Lyme to activate again.

Shortly before I became ill I also had the corona vaccination. Blood tests also show that I have a vaccine damage. I fear that an accumulation of all this misery, my body became too much.”

Post Viral Syndrome

At Post Viral Syndrome (PVS), someone develops chronic complaints after the experience of a bacterial or virus infection. The cause is a virus infection or bacteria.

POTS (Postural Ortostatic Tachycardia System) & ME/CFS

POTS is a disruption of brainstem functions and a dysregulation of the autonomic nervous system. This occurs regularly in patients with a Post Viral Syndrome. People with Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) have difficulty standing and standing. Their bodies cannot handle gravity. At POTS there is an extreme rise in the standing. This disrupts all automatic processes and functions of organs. Think of heartbeat, temperature regulation, metabolism, immune response, etc. This occurs regularly in patients with a Post Viral Syndrome. Normally, the brain stem perceives a change in your body position and the heart rate and blood pressure is adjusted accordingly. For me, this management is completely disrupted. That means that if I stand up, my blood lingers in my legs and feet and therefore less blood flows to my brain, then it should. This reduced blood flow to the brain is estimated to be between 20-30%. In healthy people, this is between 6-8%. And let it be the brain that regulates everything in our existence.

ME/CVs is associated with immunological and neurological disorders and impaired function of the autonomic nervous system. ME/CFS can occur after an infection with a virus or bacteria.

AMN (Acute Macular Neuroretinopathy)

I was also with an ophthalmologist for the blurred/lesser view of my right eye. Scans show that I have AMN on my right eye. AMN can be provoked by, among other things, virus infections and vaccinations.

Timeline of diseases:

2014 - Pfeiffer disease (Epstein-Barr virus)

2016 - Pfeiffer disease (Epstein-Barr virus)

2017 - Lyme disease contracted in Spain

2021 - corona (June)

2021 - vaccination against corona (December)

2022 - corona (February)

2022 - Flu (Influenza A) and Pericarditis (March)

2022 - Post Viral Syndrome, Dys Autonomy and Post Pericarditis (May)

2022 - Migraine (June)

2023 - POTS and ME/CFS (May)

2023 - AMN right eye (November)

Nikki has experienced a lot since her adolescence, she was also very ill from Pfeiffer’s illness at the time. She's recovered from that. From March 2022 Nikki is sick for a long time and it became too much for her body.

Complaints Nikki Experiences

Nikki suffers from the “invisible” symptoms of Lyme, POTS and Post Viral Syndrome. All kinds of complaints continue. Every day Nikki suffers from more than one of these things several times: extreme fatigue, muscle weakness, chest pain, migraines, exercise intolerance (seeing exertion), disregulated nervous system, blur vision right, stiff neck, high harstical impact when exerted, heat intolerance, dizziness, tingling, muscle tingings, tenes, left-hand scout, palsy, joint pain, identities, ignoration of sweat functions.

PEM stands for Post-Exertional Malaise, or worsening of complaints after physical, cognitive or emotional effort. Nikki’s boundary has been reached much faster in a vertical activity and if Nikki ignores, this will get into sick (er) afterwards.

Desperately looking for treatment

For a long time we have been looking for opportunities and possible treatments every day. Unfortunately without result, because after numerous medical examinations, many treatments and visits to specialists, the chance of healing within the Netherlands does not seem to exist (yet). But Nikki refuses to give up.

Treatment in the United States

Our hopes are based on a promising treatment in America of 4 months.

The treatment of Aviv Clinics in Florida USA offers a science-based program specifically aimed at the recovery of Nikki’s complaints. In her case, this is a combination of POTS (Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome), PVS (Post Viral Syndrome), ME/CFS and Lyme disease.

The program is tailored to each patient personally and consists of three phases.

1) Pre-investigation

Two weeks of medical assessment by a team of internists, physiotherapists and physiologists. In addition, cognitive tests, extensive blood tests, cardiac and lung performance tests (CPET), MR and SPECT scans are performed. For example, it is examined which areas in the brain do not work sufficiently and are therefore affected by viruses and bacteria.

2) Personalized treatment plan

Treatment consists of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT).

This therapy stimulates the brain to recover failed functions. In total, the treatment consists of 60 sessions of 2 hours spread over 12 weeks.

HBOT regulates oxygen levels and helps the body to repair itself. The treatment stimulates the growth of new neural stem cells and new brain cells.

In combination with HBOT, a personalized brain training is offered, based on the test results from phase 1. During these sessions, the brain is stimulated to create new connections and the executive functions are trained.

During the entire period of treatment, guidance is offered from a multidisciplinary team of Aviv. This consists of a team of internists, neurologists, physiologists, psychologists, physiotherapists and nutritionists. In short, a multidisciplinary approach to make progress in all health areas.

After the last treatment, extensive research is done again and worn compared these results with those of phase 1.

3) Aftercare and final research

Finally, an aftercare process of 6 months from the moment of return is followed. During this period, brain training is continued and there is a progress conversation with the Aviv team every month.

This period concludes with a final examination (as in phase 1) in the Florida clinic.

The goal

It is a very intensive and costly treatment. The cost of treatment alone is very high. With a number of additional costs such as the travel and accommodation costs for Nikki and the persons who accompany / care for her, this total amounts to approximately 80,000 to 90,000 euros.

Why the treatment in America?

The results of this treatment are promising! The people Nikki has contact with, who underwent this treatment, all achieved an improvement. In addition, the clinic has done an RCT study (research with a control group) into the treatment they perform. Others’ results and experiences are promising.

Why is help needed?

Because the treatment is not reimbursed by the health insurer, Nikki has to pay everything himself and I find that unfair and unfair. In addition, Nikki has already incurred many healthcare costs.

“The unfortunate truth is that you look healthy on the outside. After 2 years of invisible suffering, this treatment process in America is worth it. I'll do anything to restore. Even if I get a part of my old life back, I am already very happy. I dream of waking up and being able to go and stand where I want. Chasing my dreams, working full-time, starting a family, living on my own, but above all no more worries about my health,” says Nikki.

In other words, this is Nikki's chance, which she wants to tackle with both hands and that's why we need your help very much! It will certainly not be Nikki's perseverance.

Donate and share

Any donation and sharing of this message is greatly appreciated. So every contribution, big or small, bring Nikki closer to her goal. We hope that Nikki can start the treatment process in America soon thanks to your help.

Thank you so much for your support for Nikki.
