<div>My name is Jess, and I’m sharing my family’s story with the deepest plea a mother can make—to ask for your help in saving my son’s future. Seven years ago, when my son was just 11 years old, he was bitten by a tick while spending time in our home state of Oregon. Shortly after, he developed the unmistakable bullseye rash that signifies Lyme disease. Trusting the doctor we had at the time, we followed their prescribed seven-day course of antibiotics. We believed it had cured him and moved forward, trusting that he was okay.

<div>What we didn’t know was that seven days of antibiotics was far too short a course to eliminate Lyme disease from his system. For seven long years, my son suffered from undiagnosed chronic Lyme disease. Despite countless doctor appointments, testing, and searching for answers to his growing health problems, we never knew the true cause of his suffering—until now. Only recently, I fought to advocate for my son to get a full, extensive panel for Lyme disease conducted by a doctor, and the results revealed the heartbreaking truth: the infection from seven years ago had never left his body. He has been battling Lyme disease this entire time.

<div>In the years since the bite, Lyme disease has taken a devastating toll on my son’s body. Not long after the infection, he developed Bell’s palsy, an early and alarming sign of Lyme’s progression. Over time, he has faced unrelenting pain, extreme fatigue, neurological issues and so many other symptoms that have made daily life a struggle. He is now 18 years old, and instead of looking forward to his future, he’s fighting for it.

<div>Our family’s fears reached a devastating peak on October 31, 2024. That night, my son went silent for over an hour, prompting his girlfriend to call me, worried. Unable to reach him, I tracked his location and asked my parents, who live nearby, to check on him. They found him in his car—unconscious and not breathing. My dad pulled him from the vehicle and performed CPR until medics arrived and stabilized him. It was the scariest night of our lives.

<div>Since then, we’ve been rushing to complete vital tests on his heart, including a cardiac stress test, echocardiogram, and additional bloodwork, to understand how deeply Lyme disease has affected him.

<div><strong><em>Seeking Treatment:</em></strong>

<div>We’ve recently found a doctor in Grants Pass, Oregon, who offers some promising treatments. While we’re hopeful, these treatments are incredibly costly, and none of it is covered by insurance—it’s all out of pocket. As a family, we’re doing everything we can to pursue these options in the meantime, but we know it’s only part of the solution.

<div>After extensive research, we’ve also learned about a specialized Lyme treatment in Germany with a 99% success rate. This treatment offers a real chance for my son to reclaim his health and future. But it’s expensive and entirely out of pocket, like so much of this journey has been. He has his whole life ahead of him, and I’m determined to do whatever it takes to get him the care he needs.

<div>Like many families, we’ve faced endless roadblocks trying to get proper treatment for my son. Insurance rarely covers Lyme disease care, and even when doctors accept it, claims are often denied. Every test, every appointment, every treatment comes with an overwhelming financial burden. It feels like the system isn’t built to help families like ours.

<div>Through all of this, my son has always managed to put on a brave face. For the most part, he has a beautiful smile that hides the pain he feels every day. It’s a smile that masks the battle he’s fighting deep down inside. Only his close loved ones truly see the side of pain and sickness he endures. But that smile, despite the agony, is a reflection of his strength and determination to keep going, to keep fighting, because he believes that better days are ahead.
