<div>I’m desperately worried about Santi’s safety, the emotional distress, and the traumatic toll this crisis will have on him. Santi has been separated from me since June 20. I am Santi’s main caretaker, his mother, who has been with him every day since, caring after and bonding with him.

<div>I long for the mornings when I would wake up, go straight to his crib, and be greeted with the sweetest gummy smile, little legs kicking in pajamas. I miss every feed, bath time, book time, and tummy time. I would give anything to strap him into the baby bjorn or stroller and go out for a long walk, showing him the trees, flowers, and the dogs on leashes. I miss singing the songs I loved as a baby. I miss tucking him in at night and kissing his big chunky cheeks. I miss being his mommy.

<div>Santi needs to be with his mother. I am so concerned about his mental and physical health, that I have not seen or heard any updates about my baby since he was abducted.

<div><strong>My story:</strong>

<div>On the evening of Thursday, June 20, 2024, my baby Santi was kidnapped at 14 weeks by my ex-partner Jose after I suggested we separate and see if there were better ways to co-parent our son. The conversation quickly escalated to an argument and violence when I took out my phone to record the scene for my safety.

</div>
<div>[TW domestic abuse] My ex saw this, grabbed my phone, and smashed it. Scared and needing help, and with Santi in my arms, I ran to the door to leave the apartment. Jose was able to block us from leaving, repeatedly shoving us away from the door. It was after many attempts at pushing me and trying to grab Santi, Jose was successful in getting Santi from me and not permitting me to leave. After yelling for help nobody was coming, and my cell phone was broken, I then ran to our bedroom. I gathered some courage to leave the room and when I did, the house was empty. I began packing a small backpack and left the apartment with the intention of retrieving my baby from him and getting help. When I arrived at the bottom floor of our building, my ex was there but Santi was gone. The guards of the apartment building and Jose told me I needed to leave and that I no longer lived there.

<div>Since June 20, my ex-partner has illegally kicked me out of my home, changed the locks, skipped out on court dates, blocked me everywhere, stole every single one of my belongings, and fled to his family’s home, kidnapping my son. I have been on my own since and Santi is my only family.
</div>

</div>
<div>I have been desperately working with the authorities in Mexico to get my son back to me. I have spent endless hours at the family violence court. I have tried to reach out to his family, begging them to give me my son back and to return my belongings in the apartment we shared including all my official documents and identification. After several court meetings and interventions with the authorities, I have been granted full temporary custody of Santi. However, my ex and his family are still hiding and refusing to cooperate with court orders.

<div>I do feel that the law is on my side, and my son will be returned to me, but I now need to hire a lawyer to address the criminal charges including kidnapping, domestic violence, and theft of my belongings.
</div>

<div>The need to prove oneself as a mother is rooted in a deep-seated worry for me, I will have to demonstrate my ability to provide a nurturing and stable environment for Santi unfailingly throughout this legal process. Meanwhile, I am already facing unfair scrutiny and isolation from my ex and his family. I am afraid they will try to gain complete custody of my baby since they have abducted him.

<div>I sought out legal assistance that same day to protect my rights as a mother and Santi’s guardian, full custody, and pursue charges against his family to protect our safety. However, the legal proceedings ahead will be expensive for me on top of the mounting expenses I have from starting my life all over again four months postpartum, securing our new home, and lack of family financial support.

Al gritar pidiendo ayuda y no ver venir a nadie, con mi celular roto, corrí a nuestra habitación. Me armé de coraje para salir de la habitación y cuando lo hice, la casa estaba vacía. Empecé a empacar una pequeña mochila y salí del departamento con la intención de recuperar a mi bebé y pedir ayuda. Cuando llegué a la planta baja de nuestro edificio, mi ex estaba allí, pero Santi había desaparecido. Los guardias del edificio y Jose me dijeron que tenía que irme y que ya no vivía allí.

He estado sola desde entonces y Santi es mi única familia.

<div>He estado trabajando desesperadamente con las autoridades en México para recuperar a mi hijo. He pasado incontables horas en el tribunal de violencia familiar. He intentado comunicarme con su familia para rogarles que me devuelvan a mi hijo y mis pertenencias del departamento que compartíamos, incluyendo todos mis documentos oficiales e identificación. Después de varias reuniones judiciales e intervenciones con las autoridades, me han otorgado la custodia temporal completa de Santi.
