<div>In 2021, when she was diagnosed with colon cancer, she felt shock. Her body went cold and numb. "This must be a mistake." Jessica has always been health-conscious, exercising daily and preparing healthy home-made meals for her family. The news devastated everyone. She is too young to be facing such an aggressive illness.

<div>With her current situation, the only solution her doctors offered is a HIPEC surgery ー a dangerous procedure involving large doses of extra-strength chemotherapy, which carries the risk of causing her organs to shut down. She has exhausted all the resources and options available to her in Indiana, where she now lives. Improving the quality and length of her life depends on the quality of treatment she receives ー and the sooner the better. Timing is critical.

<div>In Indiana, cancer centers lack the proper data, resources, and tools for treating peritoneum cancer, so to access the care, treatment, and surgeons she needs, it's necessary to travel to MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. There, she can receive specialized treatment and medication (still in clinical trials, so it's not yet approved for standard cancer care around the country, and it's not supported by her insurance). This could give her a much better outcome and a longer, higher quality of life.

Mis hijos, mis ausencias futuras, lo que me faltaba por vivir... Me sometí a una cirugía urgente, me extirparon parte del intestino. Era plena pandemia. La soledad era una condena más. Recuerdo la visita de la oncóloga en mi cuarto de recuperación. Su voz fue un filo.

<div>Volví a quebrarme. Volví a desesperar. Las visitas estaban prohibidas, el Covid acechaba. Todo era oscuro. Temblaba de miedo. Pero Meyer me necesitaba y no podía renunciar a vivir. Pasé un año entero en quimioterapia. Entre vomito y vomito atendí a mi hijo y hacía como podía las tareas en mi cas. Cuando finalmente me dieron de alta, creí haber ganado la batalla. Pero la alegría fue breve. Apenas cuatro meses después, el fantasma regresó. Otra cirugía, esta vez el útero y un ovario. Pensé -ingenuamente-que esta vez sí lo había vencido.

De los tratamientos holísticos, de la medicina alternativa y de cuánto pude aferrarme en estos cuatro años, como quien se aferra a una tabla en medio de un naufragio. ¿A veces me pregunto por qué? ¿Por qué a mí? Mis amigos me dicen que soy generosa, altruista, empática. Doy de corazón. ¿De qué sirve esta entrega si la vida me condena y parece empeñada en arrebatármela? ¿Cuál es el castigo? ¿Qué debo corregir, aprender, transformar?
