Help Jamila Access Trans Revision Surgery

Donation protected

Hi! I'm Jamila. I'm (almost) 29, I live in the UK, and I'm a trans woman.

For anyone who doesn't know the current situation; support for trans people under the NHS is failing. I've been waiting for access to a basic level of healthcare since 2015, and as of January 2020, I still have no idea when I will eventually see a doctor. As a result, I've had to self-fund and fundraise to access healthcare services over the years. I have spent thousands from what little income I've had over the years to pay for hormone treatment, leading at one point to me sofa-surfing for a year.

In May 2018 hundreds of you did me a massive favour and helped me access surgery. I will never stop being grateful for that, you literally changed my life. Thank you forever. Unfortunately, all surgeries carry the risk of complications, and my surgeon has confirmed that I need revision surgery to correct the issues I've experienced with my recovery, which I am now fundraising to access in May 2020. This is going to be a tight deadline, but I'm hopeful that with your support I'll make it.

The last 2 1/2 years of my life have been emotionally and physically dominated by me preparing for and recovering from surgery, and I just want all of this over and done with so I can move on with my life. Trans bodies are so often fetishised and stigmatised, so I'm not going to be sharing the intimate details of my surgery, but anyone close to me will know how severely dysphoria has impacted my quality of life over the years; and although I can never get those years back, I am determined to live my best life in the years ahead of me, as free from the pain of dysphoria as possible.

I will not have to pay surgical fees for my revisions, but I will have to pay for accommodation and flights (including for my mum, who was an invaluable source of support during my last surgery, helping significantly with post-operative care during recovery). Two additional gender-affirming procedures that will be included in this were originally meant to take place in 2018. My surgeon has assured me that we will be able to confirm a date by the end of February; this means that I won't know exactly how much I need to raise before then, but I can't wait until then to start fundraising and will update this fundraiser as the situation develops.

There is no way that I would be able to ever afford this on my own, and I'm hopeful that this will be my last surgical trip. So much love to everyone who has read to this point, to everyone who helped last time and to everyone who helps out this time. Thank you xoxo

An auction will be taking place closer to the time; please get in touch if there are any items or services you would be interested in donating: [email redacted]

Note: I had a PayPal pool set up before this. I have closed that pool and added the amount raised as an offline donation.
