Help Jamaal Get a Wheelchair

Donación protegida
From Jamaal:

In the summer of 2017, I fell a bunch of times, a couple of times pretty dramatically. By early in the fall of that year, I started walking with a cane most of the time. (If you don’t live in Halifax, you probably didn’t see me around during this time.) Doctors started trying to figure out what is wrong with me in August of 2017. I still don’t really know. I have an undiagnosed, and probably undiagnosable, neurological disorder. More specifically, a degenerative cerebellar disorder. Whatever is going on, my cerebellum is degenerating which has seriously messed up my walky-brain but probably not my thinky-brain. The damage that has been done to my cerebellum won’t ever go away and is liable to get worse over time. Degenerative has become a key word. I don’t really know what to expect or what my timeline will look like. There is no known treatment to be pursued. At first my ability to balance, walk unaided, use stairs and escalators, navigate in crowds, navigate in the dark, etc. were pretty compromised. Now, I am finding it hard to walk at all. I don’t know what else will happen to me.

I had hoped to not need a wheelchair for a couple of years, however I am just not able to navigate the world without one. I am not especially happy about needing to get a wheelchair, or needing help to get a wheelchair, but I need help! Getting a wheelchair is a very expensive proposition, and a couple of years of only being able to work a minimal amount and mostly living off government disability support has left me without any significant financial resources. We all need help sometimes. This is the help I need.

Anything over and above the cost of a wheelchair, I will spend on moving, and equipping my home for accessibility. I need somewhere to live that isn’t at the top of a flight of stairs, and I am going to need moving help to get there. I am going to need handles and low shelves and things that most places to live don’t already have. These, however, are not primary goals. They are just things I have on my mind. Getting a wheelchair is my primary goal.

I am trying not to despair. I am trying to keep at the work of living. Thank you for whatever help you can give in this regard, even if it is just to amplify my needs by sharing this campaign. Finally, spare a thought to folks who have less recourse than I do, less friends than I do, less people to ask for help, and less reasons to keep at the work of living. There are harder roads to travel, and there are definitely people on them. We should all worry about those people. I certainly do. We should help those people when and if we can.
