Help Jackson get his Heart Surgery

Donation protected
Jackson Meke - Principal of Bishop Epalle Catholic School

Our dear friend and colleague, Jackson Meke, has a serious heart condition that requires surgery that cannot be provided in his home country, Solomon Islands.

We need your help to raise the funds to pay for medical treatment either in Australia or a neighbouring country- this is being arranged now. We will personally support flights and accommodation, but medical treatment is beyond our personal means.

We have been working with Jackson's school for 11 years and he has hosted, and helped shape over 100 Australian teachers- who are now teaching in Australian primary schools.

Jackson is a leading figure in the Solomon Islands establishing strong partnerships with Australia, Australian schools, and doing excellent work in advancing girls' education. He is only 48 years of age. You might have recently seen his school when Prime Minister Scott Morrison visited Solomon Islands (see https://www.theaustralian.com.au/nation/politics/morrison-presses-the-flesh-among-the-faithful/news-story/e9065318e435b24e15335a738583334f ).

We need to raise these funds as soon as possible to confirm medical arrangements. We, as Australians are so fortunate to have access to life saving medical treatment. Please help us help our Pacific brother before it's too late.

How do we know Jackson: Jackson is the principal at Bishop Epalle Catholic School in Honiara, Solomon Islands. Through Australian Catholic University, where Mellita and Renata both work in teacher education, we have been working in partnership with Jackson and Bishop Epalle, to take pre-service teachers to Solomon Islands to complete a 4-week teaching practicum. Our partnership has been going strong for 11 years. In this time we have become very good friends with Jackson and all the staff at Bishop Epalle. We spend 4.5 weeks in-country each year and have ongoing social media contact when we are not in Solomon Islands. Earlier this year, we funded Jackson and the Deputy Principal of Primary on a learning exchange to Australia. They spent 3 weeks visiting some Australian schools and attending University lectures at ACU. We are in direct contact with Jackson through social media and in person on a regular basis.

How we will ensure funds are used for this cause: We are covering travel, accommodation and incidental costs that Jackson needs to 1) receive the urgent medical care that he needs, and 2) has the support he needs in Australia by assisting to fund his wife's costs to be here with him and to provide care once Jackson is out of hospital before he is cleared to travel home. The costs we have already met and anticipate further meeting include: flights from Honiara to Australia (return) for Jackson and his wife; accommodation for Jackson's wife; money for food and warm clothing (Australia is very cold compared to Solomon Islands!); travel (if required) on Jackson's release from hospital to one of our homes so he can recuperate to meet medical clearance to fly home; costs for Jackson's prescription medications; any other costs that will support Jackson's recovery (e.g. bandages, pain relief medication).  We have an accurate record-keeping file on all expenses and will keep receipts of these expenses to show evidence that the funds are being used for the advertised cause.

Other things you should know: We are seeking to minimise costs wherever we can. For example, Jackson's wife will be accommodated in the hospital accommodation for family/care givers at a very a very discounted rate ($30/night). We will not be frivolous with any of these generously donated funds. We thank you for your kind support.
