Hi friends and animal lovers, We’re reaching out on behalf of our dear friend’s Laurie and Drew Lawhorn, and their two wonderful kids, Carter and Zack, rising 5th and 3rd graders at Timonium Elementary.

Last week, their sweet dog, Jackie Robinson was hit by a car right in front of their home on Margate Road.

Laurie witnessed the impact, and while Zack didn’t see the collision, he heard it from the yard and saw Jackie limp out of the road. It was a heartbreaking moment for the whole family.

Jackie was taken Timonium Animal Hospital where he was stabilized, then transferred to the Pet ER. Jackie stayed there a few days and then was referred to Orthopedic Veterinary Medicine.

Jackie Robinson sustained multiple injuries inside of his body. He has a broken radius in his left leg, pneumothorax (air trapped around the lung) which he will be monitored for and bruising on his right lung lobe. Jackie’s labs showed abnormalities which he received treatment for as well. He had a blood clot in his bladder, causing no urination for two days and then painful bloody urination to follow :( Jackie also could not keep down any food causing other issues.

Jackie’s surgery was last Friday and he is now home recovering. This ordeal has been emotionally and mentally overwhelming for the Lawhorn family — especially for Carter and Zack. Learning to navigate a new normal this summer is their primary focus.

So far the vet bills have totaled to:
$3,792 – Pet ER
$7,300 – Orthopedic surgery (flat fee)
$792 – Timonium Animal Hospital

With additional costs for follow-up appointments, and medically indicated repeat imaging, the total is expected to reach $13,000 or more.

In addition to this, they will be paying for pet sitters when their friends and family cannot help.

Jackie Robinson is a loved member of our community (even my kids adore him!) The Lawhorn’s are doing everything to help him heal, but they could use a little help. Laurie is a social worker and Drew is a middle school teacher. Both are in the helping profession and now it's time to help them!
