<div>Iris (35) vecht al 15 jaar tegen de verwoestende gevolgen van Lyme en meerdere co-infecties. Waar anderen hun leven konden opbouwen, stond dat van haar stil. Studeren, werken, trouwen, überhaupt denken aan het hebben van kinderen, ze heeft het allemaal moeten missen.

<div>De eerste 13 jaar bleef ze ongediagnosticeerd. Haar klachten werden niet serieus genomen: ze kreeg te horen dat het “tussen de oren zat” of dat ze “gewoon fibromyalgie” had. Haar omgeving begon dat ook te geloven. Ondertussen leefde Iris, gevangen in haar eigen lichaam, in een nachtmerrie. Ze was overtuigd dat er iets lichamelijk mis was. De pijn en stress dat ze niet geloofd werd was vaak ondraaglijk. Ze was(is) niet in staat om alleen te wonen en elke dag was een gevecht om uit bed te komen, alles deed pijn, en vaak was zelfs communiceren te zwaar. Ze lag machteloos te wachten tot de dagen voorbijgingen – zonder perspectief, zonder steun.

<div>Om zelf antwoorden te vinden, moest ze haar huis verkopen en al haar spaargeld in dure onderzoeken steken. Pas toen kwam de juiste diagnose: Lyme. Sindsdien zet ze kleine stapjes vooruit, maar ze is nog steeds afhankelijk van zorg, rolstoel en medicijnen.

<div>Wat het extra schrijnend maakt: ondanks haar ernstige situatie krijgt Iris géén steun van de overheid. Ze werd bestempeld als “70% gezond”, bij het UWV, terwijl ze soms niet eens kan lopen, communiceren of zichzelf kan verzorgen. Alles moet ze dus zelf betalen.

<div>Nu is er eindelijk hoop. In Duitsland, Clinicum St. Georg, bestaat een behandeling die haar écht de kans geeft om weer een normaal leven te leiden. Een kans om te werken, reizen, vriendschappen te onderhouden – kortom: om eindelijk weer mee te doen in de maatschappij.

<div>Maar deze behandeling is ontzettend kostbaar. Zonder onze hulp raakt Iris straks alles kwijt en is verdere behandeling onmogelijk.

<div>Iris (35) has been battling the devastating effects of Lyme disease and multiple co-infections for 15 years. While others were able to build their lives, hers came to a standstill. Studying, working, getting married, even thinking about having children — she has had to miss out on it all.
</div>

<div>For the first 13 years, she remained undiagnosed. Her symptoms weren’t taken seriously: she was told it was “all in her head” or “just fibromyalgia.” Eventually, even those around her started to believe that. Meanwhile, Iris was trapped in her own body, living a nightmare. She was convinced that something was physically wrong. The pain and stress of not being believed were often unbearable. She was (and still is) unable to live on her own, and every day was a struggle just to get out of bed. Everything hurt, and often even communicating was too much. She lay there helplessly, watching the days go by — without perspective, without support.

<div>To find answers on her own, she had to sell her house and spend all her savings on expensive tests. Only then did the right diagnosis come: Lyme disease. Since then, she’s made small steps forward, but she is still dependent on care, a wheelchair, and medication.
</div>

<div>What makes her situation even more heartbreaking is that, despite her severe condition, Iris receives no support from the government. The Dutch Social Security Agency (UWV) declared her “70% healthy,” even though there are days she can’t walk, talk, or take care of herself. She has to pay for everything herself.
</div>

<div>Now, there is finally hope. At Clinicum St. Georg in Germany, there is a treatment that could truly give her a chance at a normal life. A chance to work, travel, maintain friendships — in short: to finally participate in society again.
</div>

<div>But this treatment is extremely expensive. Without our help, Iris risks losing everything, and further treatment will no longer be an option.
</div>
