For those of you who may not know me, I’m a colleague and friend of Irene’s. I met her about three years ago when she joined AbbVie’s Business Development team. Since then, she’s grown from colleague to one of my very dearest friends. If you know her personally, you know she’s a vibrant soul and is always laughing. She’s got quite the sense of humor….and you never really know what her next move is. She’s got a heart of gold and honestly makes my life better and brighter. Perhaps she does the same for you! A little background: Irene has 2 sons, Alex and Nathan. Alex has a degree from Monmouth College in Accounting and is currently working as a Deal Systems Coordinator at Walgreens in Deerfield.
Nathan is 18 and graduated high school on May 21st. He received an appointment to the US Air Force Academy to play baseball for the Falcons. He will be reporting for duty June 29th. We’ll all miss him – but this is a once in a lifetime opportunity and we’re so proud of his accomplishments.
As you may (or may not) know, Irene was diagnosed with Stage II Invasive Ductal Carcinoma in March of 2017. She is triple negative BRCA2 gene mutation positive. The treatment for her diagnoses is a bilateral mastectomy and she is scheduled for surgery on May 31st.
Irene has always been extremely healthy so chose a high deductible insurance plan for 2017, which is most unfortunate. Her deductible is $7,000 out of pocket and 20% of the total billed thereafter. Her BRCA test alone was $12,000.00. As you can imagine, her surgery / treatment will be extremely costly. Post- surgery, she’ll go through 16 weeks of chemo and 4 weeks of radiation. The initial surgery will likely have her out of work for two to three weeks and sporadically after for chemo / radiation.
I’m hoping through this Gofundme page we can raise at least $15,000.00 for her treatment. Cancer is hard enough to deal with both physically and emotionally. These funds will help Irene pay for her medical treatment and household bills while she recovers. Any support is appreciated!
