Help Andrew “Rew/Drew” Regain Mobility and Financial Security

In early September 2023, Andrew "Rew/Drew" Johnson broke his femur after falling due to his prosthetic loosening. Compounded by significant atrophy from his amputation, this unfortunate incident has left Rew unable to wear his prosthesis, which deprives him of the ability to walk or work.

About Rew:

Rew's journey has been marked by resilience and determination. Born deaf in one ear, he battled and triumphed over childhood cancer at the age of 9, which required the amputation of his right leg above the knee. Chemotherapy further deteriorated his hearing in his other ear, leaving him significantly hearing impaired. Despite these obstacles, Rew turned his personal experience into a source of empowerment, advocating for differently-abled individuals.

During his later childhood and teenage years, he visited various schools, sharing his story and educating students about the rights of those with disabilities. At 17, Rew and others embarked on a 1,500-mile bicycle journey across the USA with "Amputees Across America," stopping at hospitals and rehabilitation facilities to inspire and comfort those recovering from recent amputations.

Rew has worked as a restaurant server and bartender for 18 years, working in the Yellow Springs, Ohio community since 2009. Despite facing additional challenges in a tips-based industry due to his hearing impairment and mobility limitations, Rew has persevered.

The Current Challenge:

Due to his ongoing medical issues, Rew is struggling to find new employment that can accommodate his current disabilities. While he has recently applied for disability benefits, the approval process takes several months with a possibility that he could still be rejected. If rejected, he will need to pay for legal services to make an appeal. Rew urgently needs financial support to cover his current and upcoming living expenses during this challenging period.

Rew has been my steadfast & dear friend for many years. As roommates in the past, he supported me both emotionally & financially during my own previous medical challenges. Now, it's our turn to support him. Rew has been a member of the Yellow Springs community for nearly 15 years and I believe that this close-knit village, along with friends & family from across Ohio and beyond, can come together to help him through these difficult times.
