Hello everyone, my name is Kaila and my wife and I are reaching out to the animal loving community in hopes to further help Huckleberry (a stray we named) who showed up injured to our garden and appeared to be seeking help.

About two weeks ago I was outside in our garden and a very friendly cat showed up, which is not uncommon as we have lots of cat plants. As I inspected him further I noticed a large circular wound on his left shoulder/neck area. I immediately called Boundary Bay Animal Emergency and they gave me helpful details to keep him safe until I could take him in to a rescue. Unfortunately he was chased off by a careless neighbour’s dog and my wife and I didn’t see him for about a week. The other day we got home and Huckleberry (full name Huckleberry Finn - as my wife notes he was also an orphan) was once again resting in our yard, with my two other cats just standing near by watching him.

My wife and I immediately took him to Boundary Bay Animal Emergency to get him checked out, as the wound looked much worse. After hours of waiting for him to be scanned for a chip and for bylaws to approve us making medical decisions, we were able to start him on adult flea killer, antibiotics, a topical ointment, pain medication, and got him checked for feline HIV (negative result). We were told the fleas were so bad he had clearly been outside for a while, and they were drinking so much of his blood it caused him to start to become anemic (thankfully he’s on the up with lots of food and water at his disposal).

I understand I have agreed to take the financial responsibility of Huck’s medical care, however my wife is disabled, and we have a limited income to work with. He is such a loving and amazing cat, I am happy to do the work but he is going to need further medical treatment such as - getting neutered (looking to get it done for free, but also want it done asap) on-going flea/tick care, all his vaccinations, full blood panel, a lancing for his currant wound, and follow up veterinary check-ups.

I realize I could just surrender him, but he is just the sweetest boy you have ever met. When picked up he gives face rubs, makes air biscuits and purrs so hard he sounds like a rumble factory! My wife and I have two other cats who are slowly learning he’s not a threat, and even when they hiss at him he does not hiss back and has not shown a single bit of aggression to anyone. Even the emergency vet techs were surprised how sweet he was for a cat that has clearly been outside for a while.

All funds received will go to Huckleberry’s medical care mentioned above, as well as flea/tick prevention for our other cats Yoshi and Vera - who we also want to keep healthy. Any remaining funds will be donated to a local cat rescue. I will be sure to share photos of his procedures, medications and receipts to his updates section.
