(versión en Español abajo) As many of you know, Venezuela is currently facing its most difficult humanitarian crisis in modern time. Unfortunately, the people of this country now have limited access to food, medications and other basic human needs.  Over the past several months, I have witnessed many images on social media of starving children, which have made me think: "This could be my own son". As a Venezuelan mother, living in Connecticut, I can only imagine the desperation another parent feels when hearing a child cry of hunger and not be able to comfort them with nutritious food simply because grocery stores shelves are empty or they can’t afford the tremendous cost inflation of basic staple foods. <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2017/12/17/world/americas/venezuela-children-starving.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Some children are only having one nutritious meal a day and in other severe cases only a few times a week and this includes babies. </a> &lt;--click to see a recent article from the NY Times For weeks I have felt the urge to do something about this, even if it only represents a small percentage of what still needs to be done in Venezuela. ***UPDATE:  as of June 2018, more than 200 large formula cans from costo and more than 50 smaller formula sample cans  have been shipped to Venezuela with the help of this campaing!*** The Plan To help fight hunger at the earliest stages, I contacted a Professor in my undergraduate school Dr. Cecilia Bernardoni, who founded a non-profit organization called Fundacion Innocens (1994), that is based at the University Hospital in my home city Maracaibo, Venezuela. This foundation helps save babies from HIV-positive mothers. These babies must be fed with baby formula to avoid viral infection through breastfeeding but unfortunately, <a href="http://www.bostonglobe.com/opinion/2017/05/10/for-tiniest-victims-venezuela-crisis-lifeline-hand/7VFgsyV0v3aUkb23ICKXTN/story.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">milk is one of the products with the highest shortages in Venezuela and parents often end up substituting newborn milk for rice-water or plantain-water due to lack of resources. </a><a href="http://www.bostonglobe.com/opinion/2017/05/10/for-tiniest-victims-venezuela-crisis-lifeline-hand/7VFgsyV0v3aUkb23ICKXTN/story.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">  </a>The organization is in urgent need of baby formula for these babies. The collected money will be used to send baby formula to Fundacion Innocens, which will be purchased in the US and shipped directly to Fundacion Innocens through a third party company in Florida (<a href="http://rudyexport.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">rudyexport.com</a> ), which will donate the international shipping cost. A small can of baby formula in Venezuela costs about Bs90,000 (~40% of a monthly salary) and one baby needs from 8-15 cans/month from birth to 6-months of age. Every $70 collected will provide milk for one baby for a month; they currently need baby formula to support over 80 babies in their program. Every dollar counts! ***Update: June 2018: fundacion Innocens has asked me for help with diaper for their babies. Therefore some of the money collected will also be used to send diapers. How funds will be managed Because Fundacion Innocens does not have a foreign bank account and cannot receive funds directly in Venezuela, money collected will be transferred to my bank account and I will be responsible for purchasing the baby formula and sending it to the exporting company in Miami, for it to be delivered directly at the doors of Fundacion Innocens in Maracaibo, Venezuela. I will be showing pictures at every step possible during the process. Cecilia Bernardoni, quien en 1994 fundó una organización sin fines de lucro llamada Fundación Innocens ubicada en el Hospital Universitario de mi ciudad natal Maracaibo, Venezuela. Esta fundación ayuda a salvar bebés de madres con el virus VIH. Desafortunadamente, la leche es uno de los productos con mayor escasez en Venezuela y los padres muchas veces se ven obligados a darles agua de arroz o de plátano a sus bebés por no tener acceso a leche maternizada. La organización necesita con urgencia leche maternizada para estos bebés.
