Help Hire a Lawyer for a Wrongfully Imprisoned Mom
Donation protected
This is a fundraiser by Sunnyland Mutual Aid on behalf of a local mother, Diamond, who will continue to unjustly be held in Whatcom County Jail without the assistance of a paid criminal defense lawyer.
TW: Physical abuse, assault
December Update: As of late-November, we reached the original $1,000 goal to pay for Diamond's lawyer's services and she was freed from Whatcom County Jail! While she is healing and catching up on lost time with her daughter, her family is still in need of another $1,000 to cover the rest of the lawyer's fees - that she has agreed to let be paid on a relatively generous time-table. Further assistance with donations and sharing of this fund is greatly appreciated.
Diamond is a community member whose support others rely on and is mother to a teenager.
In early October, Diamond was arrested for a threat to her sister's physically abusive ex-boyfriend in an attempt to protect her sister and get this abuser to stay away.
She wasn't given a bond and since then, Diamond has been imprisoned in Whatcom County Jail during the COVID-19 pandemic, often in isolation and with very few funds to purchase necessities like menstruel and hygiene products, while her sister's abuser is free and has come back to harass her and break her car window - despite a 75 foot protection order.
By the end of October, Diamond's sister had been told by Diamond's public defender that she would be sentenced to time served and would be released after her November 5th hearing. At the hearing, the Whatcom County judge told Diamond, in front of her family, that she was going to give her an extra 90 days "to make an example out of her".
Diamond's sister has been caring for her daughter, but now her daughter has been taken by family out of state because of the prolonged sentence, causing further displacement, distress, and violence to this family in the community.
Diamond's family is asking for assistance with 2,000 dollars for legal assistance to intervene in this cruel and unjust imprisonment. The lawyer has stated that they would accept $1,000 dollars to start and the rest afterwards. If any outside financial assistance materializes, we will notify folks and take down this GoFundMe.
