Help High School Students Find a College Mentor

With a team of top students, I am helping high schoolers apply to colleges, receive scholarships to fund their experience, and learn strategies to succeed in college.

To give a brief introduction, my name is Ethan Liebross.  I'm a rising junior at the Penn State Schreyer Honors College studying neuropsychology and English.

As a high school student, I felt overwhelmed, discouraged, and lost throughout the college application process. By the time I started thinking about college, my two older siblings had dropped out of high school. Also, I knew next to nothing about scholarships or how I could afford my education.

And even though I felt alone, I wasn’t. Thousands and thousands of high school students—especially from low-income neighborhoods—receive practically no guidance. With fresh college experience, that’s when I realized I could help.

Many high school students from low-income neighborhoods apply to colleges, but a shocking amount fails to enroll. Researcher Maya Shankar and her team found that sending just eight text messages to college-accepted high school graduates led to a nearly 9 percent increase in college enrollment among low-income students. This statistic continues to motivate me daily. If something as simple as text messages can change the course of a student’s life, imagine what a mentor can do.

My goal for this academic year is pairing mentors with at least 100 students. To date, we've expanded our reach across the country now helping over 500  clients through our weekly newswire which offers free tips for tackling college applications. We have mentors (working remotely) from Princeton, Penn State, Georgetown, and Johns Hopkins, and each day the list continues to grow. More importantly, we've paired these mentors to public school students in Texas, North Carolina, California, New York, and other parts of the country.

COVID-19 has put a strain on not only higher education but education at all levels. This strain is what prompted me to create Professor Owl, an organization that helps high school students and rising undergraduates with the college and scholarship application process.

Please know that your donation will be put to good use. We've already recycled all of the funds we've made back into the organization and just last week we announced our $250 scholarship award. Your donation will go towards the creation of future scholarship funds, the salary of our mentors and staff, and resources for our mentees.
