Help Start Healing Vibes by Lana

I'm Lana.

If you are a close friend of mine, you know that 2018 is exactly the year, when, at the ripe old age of 28, my life decided to fall apart. Read more about that here if you're interested.

Here I am, 3 months away from 2019, and despite more setbacks, I’ve lived to tell you about how I survived the worst year of my life, and how I'm currently on the way to self-empowerment and #livingmybestlife. It’s also the year I got hard-core into therapy, yoga, and reading everything I could get my hands on in hopes of turning my life around. As Brené Brown often talks about the power of vulnerability, when we share our vulnerable, authentic selves with the world, we give permission for others to be themselves as well. As part of my yoga training, I set that as my intention.

Yoga has become a big part of my healing journey. As a trauma survivor, it has been integral in helping me toward better mental health. Yoga found me at a time when I needed the most and didn't know it. Yoga held me at a time when a body couldn't.  Yoga ultimately saved my life.

My goal, as my lengthy background in nonprofit work can attest, has always been to help people. That’s the whole purpose of this Healing Vibes Project. That’s the purpose of my yoga practice and teaching.I am still alive today because I was lucky enough to have the support from a small group of friends who truly cared about me, two great therapists, one specifically specializing in trauma, and yoga, but not just any yoga. Authentic, trauma-informed, embody love and off the mat into the world certified yoga. It showed me that it’s ok to sometimes just sit with our grief and pain, and is teaching me how to work through those emotions. I feel incredibly lucky to have access to these resources and supports in my life because for years that hasn’t been the case.

Why did I start this project? Because I know what it’s like to have to go through some serious, soul-crushing, life-altering shit alone, all under the blanket of mental illness and no access to help or resources. Because I know what it's like to be a part of marginalized communities and feel like you don't have a safe space. Because I know what it's like not to have access to help and resources. For a long time neither yoga nor access to therapy and other mental health resources were accessible to me, primarily due to heavy costs associated with them, and also due to a lack of diversity in the yoga scene. There just weren't a lot of people who looked like me out there and since I was heavier, queer, and not bendy like the thin white, presumably straight women I saw on instagram, I thought I didn't belong in the yoga world.  I was lucky enough to find a studio that embraced mental health, diversity, acceptance, and body positivity, while offering affordable classes, and the rest is history. Right now, locally, here in Greensboro there isn't a resource like this available so I'm here to create it!

Beginning in 2019, after I receive my RYT200 certification, I will begin teaching a Queer Yoga class weekly at the LGBTQ+ community centers  here in the triad. I also hoping to offer community based, trauma informed, body positive classes open to everyone (pending I find a location). in the Greensboro community. All of these classes will have the necessary equipment folx would need to access the yoga practice and will be offered on a sliding scale/donation basis. No one will ever be turned away due to a lack of resources.

I’m not a mental health professional or a substitute for one or for medication, but through this project I’m here to share with you my story, offer tips that have helped me, share my trauma-informed yoga teacher training and mental health tips, and to help end the stigma. I'm here to build a safe, trauma-informed, body-positive space for LGBTQ+ identifying folks, POC, and to bring all the mental and physical health benefits of yoga and meditation and mindfulness as access to anyone who needs it in an accessible, community setting, regardless of means to pay for it. I’m here to show others  how I survived the worst year of my life and found my better self in the process and how they can too. I'm here to bring strength and healing through my yoga classes and sharing my own story through my blog. I’m here to help others to dig deep within themselves to find their true authentic selves, begin their healing journey, and empower them to get closer to living their best  life.

Sounds like your cup of tea? Excellent! Here's how you can help!
Donate what you can and help me spread the word! Where does your generosity help:
- Purchase equipment and storage supplies (including yoga mats, blocks, straps, bolsters and blankets, and if funds permit an accessible inversion tool) to keep in teaching locations/tote around with me to allow true accessibility regardless of means (about $700 per set)
- Help me pay for my certification and training (about $2,000) to allow me to charge significantly less or nothing at all for yoga classes (sliding scale, donation based, free) to allow true accessibility regardless of means.  (Most studios charge $15 upwards per class or expensive monthly package deals. This is partly to offset the cost of the teachers' education, to make a profit teaching full time, and to cover studio fees and make money for the studio. ) I am excited to begin teaching in 2019, with two LGBTQ+ community specific classes, due to the currently repression of this population in our political climate. This work cannot wait. However, until I pay off my training (which will take about another 9 months on my payment plan), I cannot register with the yoga alliance and begin teaching
- Insurance (wana keep everyone safe and protected :) ) ($180)
- Any leftover funds will be used for continued ed, particularly in yoga therapy for trauma, anxiety, and depression,  and supplies as needed (trainings range from $300-700)

Thank you so much for whatever help you can give, and I look forward to seeing you in my classes :)

Namaste,

Lana
