Want to join us in making a difference? We are raising money to benefit the Uni 2 Beyond program run by the Centre for Disability Studies, and any donation will help make an impact. Thanks in advance for your contribution to this cause that means so much to so many.
uni 2 beyond is an innovative and award-winning initiative that supports people with intellectual disability to experience university life at the University of Sydney. Our students do not get degrees but attend lectures and tutorials of their choice as audit students. The initiative allows the student a chance to participate in university social life through engagement with their peers and time on campus.
uni 2 beyond works with its students to reach their potential, gain independence and develop friendships. Students also have the opportunity to participate in internships within both the corporate and community sector.
How can you help?
Right now, uni 2 beyond has only limited funding due to the restructuring of the disability sector and the recent budget cuts to the NDIS. We are initially seeking to raise $50,000 to provide a range of crucial supports for our students. These include:
❖ Tailored goal setting and career guidance
❖ Job readiness skills and training
❖ Paid internships in corporate, small business and Government workplaces
❖ Mentoring from University students to build confidence, life skills and academic success
❖ The opportunity to engage in a range of subject choices
❖ One on one academic tutoring
❖ Linking into a peer support network
Background
Disability does not mean inability. Young people with intellectual disability have loads of potential and value to contribute. They are entitled to inclusion, education and career pathways, to realise their potential and their life’s ambitions.
At uni 2 beyond (U2B) we definitely know our students have potential and value because our award-winning social inclusion education initiative has been leading the way in Australia since 2012. We’ve already empowered over 40 students with intellectual disability to participate in a unique experience at the University of Sydney.
We are directly addressing the issue that people with an intellectual disability as one of the most disadvantaged groups of young people in Australia - less likely to complete Year 12, experience what it is like to attend a beautiful institution like the University of Sydney or participate in the labour force. Now is the time to change expectations, shift mindsets and create futures that until now have been unimagined.
What we are doing
Uni 2 beyond actually works because students are connected with committed and engaging support that is tailored to their specific needs. They are matched with university student mentors who help them engage socially with university life. Mentors also assist academically - accompanying U2B students to lectures and tutorials and reviewing and revising course content with them. Uni 2 beyond students get to choose subjects they are interested in and also receive one-on-one tutoring.
We’re asking for your support so we can continue to grow and expand this innovative initiative at the University of Sydney, making it available to many more young people with intellectual disability right across Australia.
