The “Real Story” of Gramma Sue’s Kitchen from Gramma Sue herself:
In 2018 I stumbled across the building located at 6316 Center Street. I was excited to make my dream of running a fun, family diner a reality. The building was built in 1965 and was originally a Lawson Convenience Store. Oh, the memories those were. I thought this would be a great location for a small diner.
I called the City to find out who owned the building and that’s when it all started. An architect was hired and plans were drawn. Unfortunately, the current parking lot does not have enough spaces required to have a sit-down diner. Code states it needs 28 spaces, it has 15. We agreed to make the diner more of a take out with very few seats (similar to Subway) inside to comply with code until we can expand the parking lot. Unfortunately, that was only the first bump in the road.
I have had many heartaches with contractors who were paid to do work to only not complete and/or do a very poor job after being paid. This left us in a financial hardship and we are struggling to complete the remainder 25% of the diner. We are still in need of some drains to be hooked up, flooring installed, a roof rail installed, the fire system installed and a few pieces of equipment to be hooked up.
Gramma Sue’s Kitchen will be a touch of the past with a 1950’s look with black & white tiles, a real jukebox and a 135-gallon fish tank. We will focus mainly on the lunch crowd for the time being.
After almost walking away from my dream a few times and doing my share of crying along with my husbands failing health, I feel like we need a miracle to complete our dream. I myself, am not on social media but I have heard that I am somewhat of a celebrity. Whether it be the butt of most jokes, some of them very hurtful, or a sincere question of what is going on. I believe our only chance to make this dream a reality is by asking for the community to change their current focus of Gramma Sue’s Kitchen. If you are someone with experience in any of the projects we need completed and perhaps have some spare time and compassion in your heart to help a small business, we could and would love your help!
Sincerely,
Gramma Sue
