Help give David a Micro-home

My name is Kim Cormier, I am starting this fundraising effort to benefit my new friend David, he is a lovely man without a home—he has been living on our back patio (now in a donated tent) for the last two weeks and in our lives for the past two months.

We are hoping to give back to someone and to help enable/ build a more sustainable and better future community.

Helping to support our most vulnerable members of society one person at a time.

An old Grecian proverb states – “Society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in.”

My partner and I have decided that we are willing to give up a portion of our backyard ( as our house has only one bedroom, otherwise he would be sleeping inside with us) to house David and these micro homes might be the best answer to help keep him safe, out of the elements and get back on his feet.

David has been a Kingston resident for many years, he used to own a gas station and a home. He lost his gas station due to gas theft & raising gas prices and eventually had to declare bankruptcy losing everything. He went onto renting bedrooms from friends but due to abusive relationships was forced to the streets with his belongings and losing everything to a fire.

We have collected donations of clothing, shoes, a backpack, a tent, a sleeping bag and a few kitchen items over the last two weeks. He has transitioned from sleeping on our patio furniture on our patio to sleeping in a tent in our backyard.

I have gathered a quote from EnerDynamic Buildings Systems (see below) and they have agreed to fabricate & build the structure and deliver to Kingston.

The Micro home being built is fully insulated, air sealed ( with air exchanger) but body heat can heat the inside in the middle of winter or a space heater will help take the edge off as well. It has a locked door and insulated window and a power adapter can plug right into a house ( like Christmas lights). It is fully fire resistant inside, so much so that if there is a fire the contents will burn but the structure will contain the fire. There is no plumbing so David will still be using our facilities.
EnerDynamic is able to start construction of the Microhome with a $5000 deposit in three days and then have it delivered to our property by the end of the month as they are located in Niagara Falls.

We are trying to raise as much money as possible to help take the financial burden off ourselves and David’s monthly contribution from collecting aluminum cans and his ODSP monthly housing allowance. Once we have paid off the full price of the micro home the ownership will be transferred into David’s name and he will finally own his own home again. Our long term goal is for David to own his micro home and move it to a forever spot that he can live and regain a sense of independence again.

He has made a short video ( yes its distorted because he doesn't have the best technology - please just listen to his words) that I have uploaded to my YouTube for your viewing.
