Help Girls on Periods in Rural Uganda & Refugees

Sunny Smiles Initiative (previously Smiling Faces) is a non-profit organization located in Mukono, Uganda collaborating with medical students from New Mexico.

Founder of Sunny Smiles, Richard Buule, is a 4th year medical student in Uganda. After seeing patients and people around him who experience menstruation but end up resorting to using unsafe and unhygienic methods to address the flow, such as unwashed cotton or cloth, he desired to do something about it. Starting this December together with UNM medical students, our mission is to empower, create awareness about menstrual hygiene, and provide disposable and reusable resources, mostly to the rural and refugee camps in Uganda. Focus is on de-stigmatization and establishing a sustainable resource for pads and other items where they’re needed the most.

Being able to properly take care of menstruation is critical for not only mental health, but for continuing education, preventing dangerous infection and disorders, and more for many girls in Uganda.
