My name is Tessy Okoto nee Adogah, a Pharmacist and I work in Nigeria. My husband --- and I have three beautiful daughters.

GILLIAN, my youngest was born to our family on the 18th of November, 2016. Her birth was special because she has two elder sisters who longed to have a 'real baby' as they called her.
She had a normal birth with no complications during pregnancy.

As she grew older I wondered why she would not notice when I walked into the room merely from my voice except she saw me, I wondered why she wouldn't respond to her name even though we tried calling her severally, I wondered why she would scream so loudly if she could hear herself screaming.

GILLIAN was 6 months old when we confirmed she had a severe to profound hearing loss(sensorineural).
Gillian was said to be deaf. Small wonder she was not responding to sound.

Unlike mild to moderate hearing losses where hearing aids could help, she needs to undergo a cochlear implant surgery to enable her hear and speak.

Cochlear implant surgeries are not routinely done in Nigeria. We contacted hospitals in India, Egypt and South Africa and considered several factors in services provided by a health provider such as speech therapy, rehabilitation service and the strength of the cochlear implant team and settled for Tygerberg Hospital, Cape Town, South Africa. We have met different children with the cochlear implants done in South Africa even two Nigerian families and have full confidence in the provider we have chosen.

The cochlear implant devices cost a fortune that people cannot afford to pay out of pocket. In the UK, it costs £38000-£45000. As Nigerians, we will need to pay out of pocket as private patients. It would be 24 million naira to help Gillian hear with both ears. We cannot fund it alone. Please all i want to do as a oarent is to give my naby girl the chance of a good life. With a cochlear implant she would be able to hear and speak. Please we need your support to help Gillian hear and speak. I will be grateful for any amount you can donate. Thank you so much for your time.
