Help Get Special Needs Single Mom Back on the Road

November 28th I left the house to pick up my daughters and everything changed for us. I thought nothing of it as I pulled into the intersection after the car in front of me, but that’s when someone decided that their time was more important than others lives and flew through the red light from an empty turning lane and took off the whole front of my car.
I was so lucky in several ways - if he had hit a few feet further back I probably wouldn’t be here, and my almost four year old twins weren’t with me, but after that day our luck has run out.
My car ran well and had low miles for a 2008 and would’ve given us several more safe years of driving but to others it wasn’t worth a lot. The insurance company will value the car at between $3,000-$4,000 and with that amount of money we will not be able to get another car that is safe and reliable for the kids.
That’s our situation, now a little bit about us!
My name is Martha and I’m a 41yr old single mother of amazing twin girls who will be four in a few weeks. Alice is outgoing, smart and silly, her sister Billie is the sweetest and smartest little girl you’ll ever meet despite being diagnosed with severe autism and being nonspeaking. Both girls are in school five days a week that I need to be able to take them to and pick them up, and I don’t think I’ve ever seen kids who love school more! We spend our days playing at the park with our poodle Scooby who is training to be a service dog and going on adventures trying to see things around LA. We didn’t have a car for two weeks after the accident due to severe trauma on my part and I have to say they were miserable no matter what I did. Luckily their father was willing to help us rent a car as I don’t have any money for one until after an insurance settlement, but it has gotten to the point where that isn’t an option anymore. We only have a rental car until this Friday, January 12, 2024 and then I have been told “it’s on you to get a car and that’s it” so we are now stuck between a rock and a hard place. I am unable to work because I have to be free full time to care for my girls, especially Billie as I only have any help with them on Thursday and Friday for a few hours when I can afford it and their father is unable to keep a consistent schedule meaning the only hours I am not parenting consistently are from 9am-12pm, without a car I can’t even get a delivery gig a few hours a day to help make ends meet. This has created the perfect storm of fear, stress and anxiety on a daily basis as I never know if I will have enough money to last the month and no way to help keep us afloat. Not knowing if you’ll be able to feed your kids or drive them to the doctor in an emergency is the worst feeling I’ve ever experienced.
I don’t know another way out of this than to ask for help. All money will be put towards getting a car for the three of us, luckily we already have safe car seats that were replaced after the crash, but what good do those do without a vehicle? I know times are tough all around but any little bit, including spreading the word on our behalf, is greatly appreciated. I will post updates as we continue our journey on finding a car - Alice has only one request which is that we get a green car and I hope that soon I can make that happen.
