Randy Leonard was born 34 years ago with a Congenital Heart Defect: Pulmonary Atresia/Intact Ventricular Septum - The pulmonary valve does not exist, and the only blood receiving oxygen is the blood that is diverted to the lungs through openings that normally close during development. He has just 3 Chambers of the Heart - 1 Ventrical. Randy has now had 5 Heart Surgeries to get him to this point in life: 1-Closed Heart: Blalock Tausig Shunt Surgery when he was 16 hours, 1 Closed Heart Glenn Procedure at 2 !/2 yrs, 1 Open Heart Fontan Procedure at age 4 and then the Fontan revision procedure at 25 years and his most recent on June 22, 2017 where he had an Open Chest Procedure for a Pacemaker.
These are rare defects and most cases such as Randy's there is no known cause.
Randy is a case study and his heart did not develop leaving him with just the three chambers and has been with OSF Pediatric Cardiologists and Surgeons his entire life.
On June 22nd, 2017 Randy had to have Open Chest Surgery to put in a pacemaker, since his heart rate was slowing and this pacemaker will get him into the next stage of this journey.
Randy and his family have a strong belief in God and have known that God provides and sends loving, caring people to help in time of need. That time is here and since Randy will have a 2 month recovery, with a 5 lb weight restriction, he will not be able to work. Anyone who knows Randy understands that this hard for him, since he works hard to provide for the family he so loves. Randy and his wife, Meghan have 7 children ranging from 12 yrs to 4 months and will need help with a medical expenses as well as other living expenses since he does not have any short or long term disability insurance. Please consider helping out this wonderful family with any type of donation you can. No amount is too small, every little bit would help him and his family on his road to recovery.
