My name is Renee, and a year ago, I went through something no mother should ever experience. During my son’s birth, my doctor was distracted by another delivery and I was overdosed with Pitocin. It caused my son to be deprived of oxygen and that led to an emergency C section one I was awake for in the beginning. I had to be placed on oxygen. My epidural failed. They rushed me to the OR before I could notice. I begged to be put under before and as I felt them cut me open, and only then did they act while I was screaming, telling them I could feel everything.

Afterward, I found out my medical chart had been changed to say I had a “high risk pregnancy,” even though I didn’t, i was extreamly cautious and safe during my pregnancy. It felt like an attempt to cover up what really happened that day.

My baby survived, but his life was forever changed. Because of the events during his birth, he now lives with:

Spastic quadriplegic cerebral palsy

Hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy

Intractable myoclonic epilepsy

Pulmonary hypertension of the newborn

(He doesn't have this anymore, but he was on ECMO for it. He was also on a vent for a large portion of the beginning of his life.)

Bilateral hearing loss

Hypoxemia

Sialorrhea

Respiratory distress

Hyperopia in both eyes

Cerebral/cortical visual impairment

Esotropia

He also has an ostomy bag from NEC, a G/J tube because he cannot swallow, and will need a VNS implant when he turns two. He’s turning one soon, and while I’m endlessly grateful he’s here, it breaks my heart knowing all he’s had to endure in his short time here and all the things he will never be able to do. I will never hear my son say I love you.

I almost didn't survive either. I lost a dangerous amount of blood after surgery and later developed a massive pulmonary embolism caused by the C section. They only found it because I was in a car crash six days after the birth and three hours after being discharged the first time. I then stayed in and out of the hospital for a month due to the clot and a uterus infection.

All we want now is justice for what happened to me, and for what was taken from my son. But before we can even begin a case, we have to pay $5,000 for a medical review by a certified doctor to determine if it qualifies as malpractice. As a low income family, that cost is far beyond what we can afford right now.
