Help Gessie Sell Her Debut Book

Hi, I’m Gessie! The author of the long-term impact of French Colonial Administration  on Haiti and French Guinea Factors that Affect the Unmet Potential of Haiti and Guinea. As the author, I wanted to write a book that offers such honest and simplistic truth to a complex issue. I wanted to look at an issue like poverty in a country that is stricken with large populations of people living in abject poverty and talk about it candidly. In my debut work I analyze difficult data in a manner that the every day person can understand. I look at the social, economic, and political factors that affect the unmet potential of Haiti and French guinea as it is being explored through the historical lenses of the long-term impact of French colonialism in both countries. Often times from such conversations comes the realization that it’s hard to understand our present state let alone see our futures and how we can move forward if we are unable to look at our past.

I had to look at my own life to really understand the last statement, I was born in Haiti and I grew up in the small state of Rhode Island with both parents and my older sister at the time and we were brought up living in a predominately white community so I subsequently suffered with understanding and embracing who I was and where I came from. I was often embarrassed to disclose that I was an immigrant from Haiti. I didn’t have the support that I needed to realize that I came from fighters, survivors, emancipators, warriors and royalty even. Every time black history month came, I was so angry and sad to hear about the history that was being taught to me. The way it was explained to me it started and ended in slavery but if we look to moments in history like the Haitian Revolution we know that is a lie. It wasn’t until I got to college was I able to debunk many of those fibs that I was taught to believe were true. This book project came about because I wanted there to be truth being told and an open dialogue about where countries like Haiti and French Guinea are and really look at all the variables that lead to them being in the state that they’re in so that we can look at prescriptions for solutions that are specific to those countries cultures and that one could say will really work. There is no one way to solve a problem especially a problem as big and complex as poverty.

I’m asking for donations today because I want to be able to purchase the book in bulk and resell the book so that it can be sold to people at a more affordable rate.  Right now the book is being sold through Morebooks for $35.90 and I want to significantly lower the cost so that it could be more accessible  to people in the coming months.  With your help I can get this book into the hands of many and that to me would scream power because I know that what is being said in the book has the potential to change the world even. Because this book is a comparative analysis between Haiti and French guinea I will not only be filling in the gap in the literature but I will be strengthening the bridge between the continent and it’s diaspora.

It is my deep desire to inspire a new generation of Haitians, French Guineans and immigrants in general to not only realize who we are, but to also recognize more about our history, and to understand where we came from so that we can feel empowered to come to the realization about where we are going. I thank you in advance for reading and for your contribution, whether that be through making a direct donation, from forwarding post and emails, or spreading the word through word-of-mouth. Each and every dollar counts and will assist with addressing the history of Haiti & French Guinea. I certainly hope this book project will spark the interest of others to come together and to galvanize them into action. Don’t like that we have not met our potential in some areas and have exceeded them in other areas….let’s do something about it and be the change we want to see in the world.
