Help Gery to walk again!

Dutch text below / Nederlandse tekst onderaan.

Gery used to be a self-employed photographer, scuba diver, scuba diving instructor and volunteer diver for Ghost Fishing and Project Baseline until she lost consciousness after a dive in September 2016.

She had just bought a new place to live, with her partner Ted, and they were in the middle of renovating their new house, when they went to Sardinia for a short holiday.

After a well-executed technical dive, Gery surfaced in a happy mood. However, after climbing on board, Gery lost consciousness. Apparently, a tiny hole in her heart had caused a shunt and bubbles ended up in her brain. Gery was in coma when she reached the hospital and hyperbaric centre.

The following days, she was kept in an induced coma while undergoing 8 long treatments in the hyperbaric chamber. After 18 days, she was transferred to The Netherlands, where she slowly regained consciousness. After another 22 days in hospital, she was moved to a specialised rehabilitation centre. At this time, she could not talk, or move any part of her body. During the following 5,5 months in rehab, she learned to speak again, to read, and to sit. Slowly also her arms and legs started to move.

Seven months after the accident, she finally returned home. Still unable to walk or perform any basic activity.

Therapy continued at a specialised physiotherapy centre. Fortunately she continued to progress.

In 2018, her medical insurance granted her permission to go to Spain, to a specialised clinic, for intensive neurological rehabilitation. Instead of the usual half an hour per day, she now had 3 hours therapy a day, 5 days a week. She received intensive treatment for 2 months, in Feb-March and Oct-Nov 2018. During this time, she progressed very well. She hopes to go again end 2019 or early 2020.

Now, back home in The Netherlands, she trains with several physiotherapists nearly every day. But because the insurance only covers physiotherapy for maximum half an hour per day, any additional therapies are at her own cost.

Currently, she pays for a specialised personal trainer to work with her, three times a week. Together, they work on posture, endurance, strength, and of course her biggest goal: learning to walk again.
There are several other types of therapy that can speed up Gery’s progress: ‘Functional Myofeedback’ is a specialised training form that could help Gery to get rid of spasticity, mostly present in her left leg and foot and hindering her in standing and learning to walk (especially when getting tired). If money allows, she would like to get this training, where we estimated to need 3 weeks to get the desired results. Next to all the physical work, she follows a treatment called ‘neurofeedback’. An interesting therapy or training, that helps the brain regulate brain activity and communication between parts of the brain. As soon as she started neurofeedback training, she started to improve.  Gery continues to make progress, and there is reason to believe she will walk again and will be able to take part in life again. But it will take a lot of time, effort and money. Unfortunately, her savings are depleting, with no income she cannot pay for the expensive therapies and trainers… Gery needs your help to get back on her feet and take part in life. Besides being able to walk, her dream is to get back to her job as a photographer and make her own living.

We have estimated the costs for this year:

Specialised personal training 2019 + 2020           10.000
Neurofeedback training 2019 + 2020                  6000
Functional Myofeedback  2020                         3600
Flight tickets to Spain 2019                               680
Total 2019 and 2020                                   20.280

Nederlands:
