My name is Maria Marcano, Gabriela Scavo’s mother and I’m reaching out today with deep humility and hope.

I came to the United States from Venezuela when she was 12 years old. For the past six years, we’ve built our lives here in Houston, Texas, surrounded by a community that has become our home.

After Gabriela graduating from high school, she was accepted in Florida International University (FIU), where she is pursuing a degree in Sports Management. Her first year at FIU has been a dream come true — filled with hard work, dedication, and hope for a better future. She divides her time between studying and working, supporting herself and her education.

Recently, her life took an unexpected and painful turn when she was detained by ICE, despite having valid documents derived from the asylum case I filed years ago — including a work permit, Social Security Number and driver’s license. Gaby was held for 17 days before being released. Although she is now free, she must face a defensive asylum process before an immigration court.

This legal process is complex and expensive, but it’s the only chance to remain in the country, continue her education, and contribute to the society that has given us so much and we are deeply grateful.

We are raising $10,000 to cover the legal representation and court expenses. Every dollar will go directly toward paying for the immigration attorney and the necessary filings to defend her case.

Mi nombre es María Marcano, soy la madre de Gabriela Scavo, y hoy acudo a ustedes con mucha humildad y esperanza.

Llegamos a los Estados Unidos desde Venezuela cuando Gabriela tenía 12 años. Desde hace seis años vivimos en Houston, Texas, donde hemos formado una vida y una comunidad que ya sentimos como nuestro hogar.

Después de graduarse del high school, Gabriela fue aceptada en la Universidad Internacional de la Florida (FIU), donde estudia Gerencia Deportiva. Su primer año ha sido un sueño hecho realidad, lleno de esfuerzo, dedicación y esperanza por un futuro mejor. Además de estudiar, divide su tiempo entre el trabajo y la universidad, haciendo todo lo posible por salir adelante y costear sus estudios con mucho esfuerzo y sacrificio.

Recientemente, su vida dio un giro doloroso cuando fue detenida por ICE, a pesar de contar con documentos válidos derivados del asilo que presente hace varios años, entre ellos, permiso de trabajo, Número de Seguro Social y licencia de conducir. Gaby estuvo 17 días detenida antes de recuperar su libertad. Aunque ya esta en casa, ahora debe enfrentar un proceso de asilo defensivo ante una corte de inmigración.

Este proceso es complejo y costoso, pero es la única oportunidad de permanecer en el país y continuar sus estudios para seguir aportando a la sociedad que nos ha recibido y de la que estamos profundamente agradecidas.

Estamos recaudando $10,000 para cubrir gastos legales y de representación. Cada contribución irá directamente destinada al pago del abogado de inmigración y los trámites necesarios para defender el caso.
