Help Future Dr. finish Senior Year!

Donation protected
Greetings,

My name is Alex Barber, and I am a rising senior at Howard University. I am from Charleston, South Carolina, and I'm currently pursuing a degree in Biology, with goal of being a medical doctor.  I am writing this letter to graciously request $10,000 in financial assistanceto help pay for my summer and senior year at Howard University.

I have learned a great deal about my responsibilities and myself during my matriculation as a Howard student.  As a young black man, I hold the responsibility of upholding the values and legacy of my family and ancestors; while simultaneously setting a positive example for those who come after me. I have grown to realize that the love that has been provided and the sacrifices that my family and my ancestors have made must never go to waste.  I have a duty to accomplish the tasks that God has set forth before me and to live beyond being a statistic. Therefore, I must never surrender to hardship.

Even during unstable financial periods, God has always provided a way for me to return to Howard University. I am confident that this instance is no different. Unfortunately, after exhausting all of my available resources, I still owe a substantial balance on my student account. Currently, I am working on campus to help alleviate as much of this balance as possible. After my summer job contributions and my family’s financial support, I will still have a $10,000 balance. As a child, after my father’s death and mother’s illnesses, a loving guardian adopted me. As someone who was adopted, I am eligible to register as an independent student on my FAFSA. As an independent, I am ineligible for Parent Plus Loans I am also ineligible to receive a private student loan. The elimination of these options have caused my balance and rendered me unable to register for my final year of undergraduate classes.

Throughout my life, I have received copious amounts of love and support in which I have attempted to repay through my service to others. I currently serve as a volunteer for the Washington Home Hospice Center and the DC Humane Society. I plan to extend my service to the community by mentoring and teaching children that have similar backgrounds as me. Also, as an alumnus Howard University, and future medical school, I’d like to help send children to college, and seek to fix health disparities in my community.
Finally, when I reach the height of my career, I'd like to open a clinic in my community and make access to healthcare easier for disadvantaged patients.

Though my past may seem like a melancholy memoir, I read it differently. To me, my past is my greatest motivation. My story is one of a boy who refused to break under life’s pressures. The tale of how God's love, persistence, and purpose guided a boy, with the odds stacked against him, to be a prosperous man. With my story, I will inspire others to overlook their reality and focus on their aspirations. Only then will they be unstoppable.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Alex Barber
