The Cooperative Gardens of Narberth (CGN) is a newly formed local group dedicated to helping neighbors learn to grow food from their homes and in community gardens, and to donate produce from these gardens to local food banks and charitable organizations to help combat food insecurity in our community. Food insecurity is a challenge for many people in our community, and the COVID-19 crisis and resulting economic impacts have more neighbors than ever depending on our local food banks.
Our vision as an organization is to help foster a community where people connect, collaborate, and inspire one another to grow food for themselves, their families, and our neighbors in need, and work together to build a sustainable and food secure future for everyone.
In this time of upheaval and economic turmoil, citizens and local officials all recognize the important role that community gardens can play as a local food source. CGN is deeply thankful to the Narberth Borough Council and members of the Narberth Borough government, who have approved plans to allow us to build two community gardens in Narberth.
The Giving Garden will be located behind the Narberth Library. It will consist of raised garden beds which will be planted with high yield vegetables. This garden will be maintained by CGN volunteers, and produce from the garden will be donated to local food banks.
The Community Garden will be located in the back corner of the 201 Sabine/Sabine Park parking lot. This garden will feature raised garden beds as well. Individuals and groups can become members of the Community Garden and have a dedicated garden bed to use. Garden members will commit to donating a portion of the harvest from their beds to local food banks.
To build these gardens, we need your help! We are seeking donations to help build the beds at both sites, and to obtain the needed soil, plants, and other materials to get the project growing. Donating to this community garden effort is a way to help support food security and neighbors in this challenging time. A donation to this effort can also be a way to honor a friend or loved one for a special occasion, or to remember someone you love. Please let us know if you are donating in honor or memory of someone. Names of donors will be commemorated at the garden sites.
Our group, and all of those who will benefit from these gardens, are deeply appreciative of your support!
