Support the expansion of sign language captions!

Intro

My name is Mariella Satow and I have developed ‘SignUp’ which is a free Google Chrome Extension providing on-screen sign language signing, alongside children’s movies on Disney+ and Netflix.

The response to SignUp has been overwhelming since I launched it a year ago. There have been thousands of visitors to the website, hundreds of likes on social media posts, and dozens of emails. Thank you.

We have been growing ever since, and have launched in the UK and on Netflix! I need your help to keep SignUp expanding.

Where will the funding go?

I have paid for everything so far with the money I have made from dog walking - that's a lot of dogs! SignUp is growing at such a rapid rate that I cannot meet the costs on my own and so would appreciate your support! Let’s do this together!

1. Interpreter costs - I aim to have many more movies and TV shows interpreted - I have had so many requests already - I promise ‘Frozen’ is coming! I would also like to have signing for media for an older audience. International expansion means hiring more interpreters from all over the world. 

2. Advertising - Ads for Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok. 

3. Tech development - Expand to Netflix, Hulu, and other streaming services. Provide a more supportive user experience. Develop a mobile/tablet version.

SignUp’s Potential

My dream is for the impact of SignUp to be as far-reaching as possible and I have already had some international interest.

How SignUp came about

I started learning ASL last year, and soon realized there was a lack of free and engaging learning resources. After further research, I discovered how limited the opportunities were for certain Deaf individuals, especially children, to engage fully with television and movies and decided it was time to change this. I worked with ASL experts and the Deaf community to create SignUp. SignUp enables a viewer to stream a movie and, simultaneously, a small pop-up window will appear with an interpreter signing in ASL. Students can use it for learning and everyone can enjoy movie nights! Currently available to watch: Moana, Zootopia, and The Incredibles.
