Help Fund Shannon Barber's Medical Expenses

Words cannot capture the depths of sadness and pain I feel as I write this update. Today, unexpectedly, the world lost one of its most inspiring Social Justice Warriors. Our beloved friend and fearless leader Shannon Barber lost her battle with injuries sustained after a massive stroke on the day she was supposed to be walking across the Coliseum stage to accept her BA Degree in Political Science and Women's & Gender Studies from Winthrop University. She inspired so many of us with her words and her deeds. Her leadership of the College Democrats connected her with presidential candidates from Kamala Harris to Cory Booker. I will never forget how proud we all were of her when she stood on the stage in downtown Rock Hill and introduced Mayor Pete. She was glowing that day. Beautiful inside and out.

As we mourn and grieve this tragic loss, we also must remember to celebrate Shannon's life. I look forward to the day we can all sit around together telling our favorite stories about Shannon, memorializing her when we come back together in early Fall, and working to establish a scholarship in her name and honor. During those moments when the crying subsides, the laughter can begin. The joy of her life reminds us of the sadness we can no longer share it with her. But her light shines on.
