Surprise Baby is releasing our freshman EP this summer, and we need your help! In preparation for the release, Kalliope and I are shooting a music video at the end of April to accompany the debut single, “Poison the Well.” We are releasing this EP independently and are asking for $8,000 to fund the production and post-production costs needed to make the music video a reality.
Your support will go towards:
- Crew salary (cinematographer, costume designer, choreographer, dancers)
- Equipment Rentals (camera, lenses, lights, underwater encasement)
- Production Design (lumber, set design materials, props)
- Costume Design
- Location Rentals
- Publicity/Marketing

Kalliope, who is directing and producing the music video for “Poison the Well”, earned her MFA from CalArts, where she studied writing and film and has successfully produced two short films.
The music video follows the main character as she journeys from the serenity of the woods through the bleak undercurrents of industry until eventually finding a more stable “reality” at a backyard masquerade party. With themes of isolation, darkness and reinvention, the video merges dance, installation art, and myth in its retelling of the classic dark night of the soul.
The video's tone is dreamlike and playful as it incorporates elements of folk art, textile design and modern dance while creating a parallel world layered with discovery and surprise.
We have an incredibly talented team who have signed on as cinematographer, costume designer and choreographer, including some fellow CalArtians. Post-production will be completed by mid-June, and the video will be released early July.
In order for the video to be a success, we need your help. Your donations will support our production and ensure a professional music video that mirrors all the hard work Sarsten and her collaborators have put into the Surprise Baby EP. When you donate, you will receive a password-protected link to a Surprise Baby performance video as a thank you for your support! The video will be available at the end of April.
