NEWS FLASH! A big thank you to The Augusta Garden Club for their generous $5000 donation to Phase 2 of the WWPL Archaeology Project. We are so thankful that we were chosen as a recipient of this grant in honor of the club’s centennial.
What We Want to Do Building on the amazing results of our Summer 2018 archaeological evaluation in the rear yard of President Woodrow Wilson’s birthplace, the Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library (WWPL) plans to undertake Phase 2 in the summer of 2019.
We are excited to welcome local area residents and visitors to this unique and important site and share the experience of uncovering our shared history. We have so much unwritten history to uncover, but we can’t do it without the community’s support!
This year’s excavation will be led by Dr. Dennis Blanton, JMU Associate Professor of Anthropology who oversaw last year’s project. Last year, Dr. Blanton led volunteers in twelve shovel tests sites in the same location. The findings established that the property retains sufficient integrity and a range of deposits to warrant additional investigation.
Based on the completion of additional documentary research that is currently underway, we hope to begin excavation in July 2019 and continue for 6-8 weeks. This year’s dig would include the excavation of 8-10 units that are one-meter square
Working through JMU, our project budgeted is $15,000 and includes the cost of an experienced student team from JMU’s Archaeological Research Laboratory to work with our volunteers, equipment, site supervision, artifact processing, research, report writing, and public interpretation.
The Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library is reaching out to volunteers of all ages to join us in uncovering Staunton's past. In fact, last year’s crew ranged in age from 13 to 75!
We receive no state or federal government funding and will only be able to go forward with your financial support! Your donation will make this happen. All funds raised - 100% - will go to complete this project.
