Many of us were introduced to zines by way of the perzine, even if at first we didn’t know the name. They gave voice to our own thoughts and experiences. They introduced us to happiness and pain that resonated deeply. The paper and print linked us to minds we otherwise never would have discovered. “Here I am,” the zines say. “This is me. This is what I have to tell.”
There are countless zine fests every year, all over the country. Similar to the Dear Diary Zine Fest in Oakland, The Midwest Perzine Fest hopes to shine the spotlight specifically on the perzine, the self-published memoir, the Story of You. This comes from a passion shared amongst the organizers. Typewriters, laptops, copy machines, printers, glue sticks and scissors and paper and sharpies. This is the work we want to showcase; the emotional, the insightful, the reflective, the political.
As part of the fest, we hope to have workshops, readings and panel discussions—as much as we can to provide a rich, inspiring experience for those who love perzines as well as those who wish to discover this beautiful outlet for self-expression.
