The idea for LOA Herbs and Garden first came to be after a succession of negative experiences while shopping at local apothecaries. I witnessed them being harsh to black customers, people who were merely seeking help and guidance for their ailments, or for the ailments of the people they loved. To show a person seeking medicine cruelty to me was most upsetting - to do this while gentrifying that person’s neighborhood only made the offense worse.
I yearned for a place to practice and learn about the power of herbs, herbs that my ancestors used everyday, in a place where I could learn without judgement and without microaggressions.
When I found out that my maternal grandmother had a piece of land in the same neighborhood my paternal grandmother had her house taken from her I saw it as a sign to turn my ill feelings and my hope for a better environment for BIPOC herbalists into something positive and tangible. I felt the need to start Liberation on Agriculture Herbs and Garden as an attempt to protect and preserve the BIPOC population and culture that is dwindling in the historically Black 7th Ward as the neighborhood becomes more expensive due to gentrification, the after-effects of Hurricane Katrina, and other forms of structural racism. Establishing a space where BIPOC, especially queer and trans, healers and growers can exchange knowledge safely and with love and understanding is something that needs to happen.
Over the next five years, I plan to establish the garden fully, which means securing consistent funding to pay the taxes and utilities and pay for garden materials and an active, regular group of members helping with programming, gatherings, and garden upkeep. All this is to help build up the garden so that we may expand to provide economic opportunities for young herbalists and farmers such as having stalls for a small weekly/biweekly market and part-time jobs or residencies.
