<div>In Puerto Rico, the battle for our coastline has taken a heartbreaking turn. Last week, seven peaceful defenders of the environment were arrested for standing up against illegal coastal development in Rincón. Among them, one was detained for chaining himself to a tree, an elderly protester was arrested for sitting quietly in the road, and another was taken into custody for waving a Puerto Rican flag on the wrong side of the road.

<div>They now face excessive charges in Aguadilla court this Monday, simply for demanding that the government <strong>enforce its own environmental laws.</strong> Instead of holding developers accountable for building without the legally required Maritime-Terrestrial Zone (deslinde) boundary, the government is choosing to punish those who defend Puerto Rico’s beaches, marine life, and public access to the coast.

<div>Another activist, known as Koko, has become a powerful symbol of this movement. His act of peaceful resistance—climbing and defending a native Roble tree—has led to four arrest warrants and an imminent long legal battle.

<div>En Puerto Rico, la lucha por nuestra costa ha tomado un giro triste. La semana pasada, siete defensores pacíficos del medio ambiente fueron arrestados por resistirse al desarrollo costero ilegal en Rincón. Entre ellos, uno fue detenido simplemente por encadenarse a un árbol, un manifestante de la tercera edad fue arrestado por sentarse tranquilamente en la carretera, y otro fue llevado bajo custodia por ondear una bandera de Puerto Rico en el lado “equivocado” de la vía.

<div>Ahora enfrentan cargos excesivos en la corte de Aguadilla este lunes, simplemente por exigir que el gobierno haga cumplir sus propias leyes ambientales. En lugar de responsabilizar a los desarrolladores que construyen sin la delimitación legalmente requerida de la Zona Marítimo-Terrestre (deslinde), el gobierno ha decidido criminalizar a quienes defienden las playas, la vida marina y el acceso público a la costa.
